Fans are getting a fresh glimpse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s world of Wonder Man — a series that seems self-aware of just how saturated audiences have become with superhero stories.

The newly released trailer, shared on Marvel Studios’ official X (formerly Twitter) page, teases a more personal and reflective tone. Instead of spotlighting the titular hero, it centers on an interview with fictional filmmaker Von Kovak, who candidly explains his motivation for creating a Wonder Man series in a universe already overflowing with real-life heroes.

The original Wonder Man, Simon Williams, made his comic book debut in 1964’s Avengers #9, created by Stan Lee and Don Heck. As the brother of Eric Williams, better known as the Grim Reaper, Simon’s life took a dark turn when his family business collapsed due to his sibling’s criminal pursuits. Desperate to reclaim control of his fate, Simon struck a dangerous deal with Baron Zemo, gaining immense powers in exchange for infiltrating the Avengers as a spy. Though his betrayal was short-lived, it marked the beginning of his journey as Wonder Man, a character who went on to become a key figure in numerous major Marvel storylines—despite fading somewhat from prominence in modern comics.

The upcoming Wonder Man streaming series, helmed by creator Destin Daniel Cretton and showrunner Andrew Guest, will see Yahya Abdul-Mateen II take on the mantle of Simon Williams. This MCU adaptation follows a similar path to the original — portraying Simon as an actor-turned-hero who steps into his superhero identity while auditioning for a fictional TV show about Wonder Man himself. The cast also includes Ed Harris as Simon’s agent Neal, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams / Grim Reaper, Arian Moayed as P. Cleary from Damage Control, and Ben Kingsley reprising his fan-favorite role as Trevor Slattery.

A Bold New Tone for Wonder Man

According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Wonder Man will mark a significant tonal shift from previous MCU projects. He emphasized the studio’s commitment to experimentation, noting, “We’re always trying new storylines and taking characters to new places. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they don’t—but if you stop trying, that’s when it all collapses.” Feige described the upcoming series as “extremely different from anything we’ve done before” and expressed excitement about continuing to explore fresh creative directions within the MCU.

Wonder Man is set to premiere on Disney+ in January 2026, promising a fresh, meta take on fame, heroism, and identity in the Marvel Universe.

As Wonder Man prepares to make his MCU debut, fans are eager to see how Simon Williams’ story of fame, power, and redemption will unfold in this bold, meta take on heroism. With its distinct tone, stellar cast, and Marvel’s renewed creative direction, this series promises to breathe new life into the superhero genre.
