Simon Williams, better known as Wonder Man, is one of Marvel’s most complex and enduring heroes — a man who’s walked the line between stardom and sacrifice. Once a successful actor and the son of industrialist Sanford Williams, Simon inherited his father’s company, Williams Innovations, only to see it collapse due to his brother Eric Williams’ criminal activities. In desperation, Simon turned to Baron Heinrich Zemo, who offered him power in exchange for loyalty. Transformed by Zemo’s ionic experiments, Simon became Wonder Man, a being of immense strength and energy, tasked with infiltrating the Avengers.

But Simon’s conscience prevailed. Defying Zemo, he sacrificed himself to save the Avengers, falling into a deep coma caused by the instability of his ionic form. Later resurrected through dark voodoo magic and manipulated by his now-villainous brother, the Grim Reaper, Simon once again broke free from control — this time to fully embrace his identity as a hero.

Over the years, Wonder Man became a full-fledged Avenger, taking on some of the team’s greatest threats, including Ultron and Graviton. Though he briefly returned to Hollywood and rebuilt his acting career, his heroic instincts drew him back into action with the Avengers West Coast. During the Superhuman Registration Act era, Simon sided with the pro-registration faction, joining the Mighty Avengers, and fought valiantly through the Secret Invasion and World War Hulk events — even sharing a romantic chapter with Ms. Marvel.

In time, disillusionment set in. Wonder Man confronted corruption and manipulation within the superhero community, forming the Lethal Legion and later the Revengers to challenge the Avengers themselves — though both attempts ended in defeat. Seeking redemption, he later returned to heroism, aiding in the rescue of the Wasp and serving on the Avengers Unity Division.

Embracing a more peaceful philosophy, Simon’s journey took another turn when his ionic energy was absorbed by Rogue, only for him to be later restored. He continued to stand for hope and heroism, even protecting Laussa Odinsdottir from Malekith during the War of the Realms.

From traitor to titan, from actor to Avenger, Wonder Man’s story is one of evolution, resilience, and redemption — proof that true heroes are not born perfect, but forged through failure, courage, and the will to rise again.

Early Life and Fall from Grace

Simon Williams, the man destined to become Wonder Man, was born into wealth as the son of industrial magnate Sanford Williams, owner of Williams Innovations. Ambitious and intelligent, Simon inherited his father’s company after his passing. However, his brother Eric Williams’ criminal actions and poor business decisions led the company to financial ruin. Desperate to save his family legacy, Simon was caught embezzling funds — a decision that would change his life forever.

Deal with Baron Zemo and Birth of Wonder Man

Facing imprisonment and disgrace, Simon was approached by Baron Heinrich Zemo, the notorious Hydra scientist and enemy of the Avengers. Zemo offered Simon salvation and power in exchange for loyalty. Agreeing to the deal, Simon underwent experimental ionic energy treatments that transformed him into an enhanced being — Wonder Man. His strength, speed, and durability became nearly limitless, powered by the unstable ionic energy coursing through his body.

However, Zemo’s plan was sinister. Simon was ordered to infiltrate the Avengers and destroy them from within. Yet, upon meeting the team and witnessing their heroism, Simon’s conscience awakened. Choosing honor over manipulation, he betrayed Zemo and sacrificed himself to save the Avengers, falling into a deathlike coma caused by his unstable transformation.

Resurrection and Redemption

Years later, Simon’s body was resurrected through dark voodoo magic under the control of his brother, now transformed into the supervillain Grim Reaper. As a mindless puppet, Wonder Man attacked the Avengers — but their compassion and persistence helped him break free of his brother’s control. Regaining his free will, Simon rejoined the Avengers, vowing to honor the life they had given back to him.

Becoming a True Avenger

No longer a pawn, Wonder Man became a dedicated member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, facing off against villains such as Ultron, Graviton, and countless other cosmic threats. Simon’s incredible ionic physiology made him virtually immortal, allowing him to stand side-by-side with legends like Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor.

Despite his heroics, Simon longed for normalcy and eventually returned to Hollywood, reviving his acting career. Fame found him once again, but so did purpose — leading him to join the Avengers West Coast, where he balanced life as a celebrity and a superhero.

Civil War and the Mighty Avengers

During the events of the Superhuman Registration Act, Wonder Man sided with the pro-registration faction, believing structure and accountability were necessary. As part of the Mighty Avengers, he fought alongside Ms. Marvel, with whom he shared a romantic relationship. Simon played crucial roles in battles like Secret Invasion and World War Hulk, proving his worth time and again.

Disillusionment and the Revengers

Over time, Simon grew disillusioned with the Avengers’ methods and the constant cycle of destruction surrounding the superhero world. Seeking change, he formed the Lethal Legion and later the Revengers, challenging the Avengers directly. However, both ventures ended in defeat. Confronted by his own bitterness, Simon realized that vengeance was never his true path.

Return to Heroism and Pacifism

Seeking redemption, Wonder Man once again found his way back to the light. He helped rescue the Wasp, joined the Avengers Unity Division, and eventually adopted a more pacifist outlook on life. Though his ionic energy was absorbed by Rogue, Simon’s essence was later restored — a symbolic resurrection that mirrored his unbreakable spirit.

In the War of the Realms, Wonder Man stood alongside the gods themselves, protecting Laussa Odinsdottir from Malekith, proving once again that heroism is not about power, but perseverance.

The Revengers

Disillusioned with the Avengers after witnessing what he perceived as repeated failures, Simon Williams concluded that the team caused more harm than good. Determined to hold them accountable, he organized a group of lesser-known heroes, sharing his perspective and convincing them that the Avengers needed to be stopped.

Targeting Avengers Mansion, the Revengers waited until Danielle Cage, daughter of New Avengers members Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, had left the premises. With the full New Avengers roster present, Williams led the assault, with Atlas spearheading the charge. Despite the New Avengers’ valiant defense, the Revengers briefly overpowered them, and Simon set his sights on Avengers Tower, home of the main Avengers team.

When Atlas attacked Avengers Tower, the confrontation drew the attention of the team, who called a press conference to address the situation. After failed negotiations, Iron Man trapped Wonder Man in a containment unit, while Thor teleported the Revengers to Citi Field to prevent civilian casualties. There, the combined efforts of the Avengers and New Avengers subdued the group, and the Revengers were imprisoned. Later, after warning the team through Beast, Simon mysteriously vanished from containment.

Uncanny Avengers

Following his redemption through aiding the Avengers in rescuing the Wasp from the Microverse, Simon joined the newly formed Avengers Unity Division, a team focused on bridging the gap between mutants and humans. Embracing pacifism, he adopted a philosophy that conflicts could not always be solved with fists.

During a mission involving the Apocalypse Twins, Rogue absorbed the powers of multiple heroes, including Simon, causing her to temporarily lose control. His consciousness remained within her during Red Skull’s attack on Genosha, and he assisted the X-Men using Rogue’s powers. Eventually, Simon was restored to his own body after Rogue’s powers stabilized, even though Wanda initially could not locate him. His release was triggered by Rogue’s kiss with Deadpool, whose healing factor acted as a circuit breaker for Simon’s ionic essence.

War of the Realms

Simon was recruited by Balder the Brave to protect Balder’s younger sister, Laussa Odinsdottir, from the Dark Elf Malekith. Demonstrating his resourcefulness, Wonder Man offered his RV for covert travel, destroyed portions of a bridge to mislead enemies, and assisted the group in navigating multiple locations safely.

During their journey, they stopped at Bide-a-Wee RV Campground, where Simon encountered hidden Skrull residents from the Secret Invasion. Acting quickly, he neutralized the threat while Laussa calmed the aliens. Later, in the western-themed town Six Gun Territory, Simon protected Laussa and navigated a series of supernatural challenges, ultimately discovering that she herself held significant powers, tied to her sister Sindr rather than Balder.

Empyre

Simon responded to the call when Earth faced the Empyre threat led by the Cotati, joining the Avengers to confront the interstellar menace.

The Ultron Agenda

During a quieter period focused on acting, Simon was drawn into superhero duties when Ultron, merged with Hank Pym, forcibly fused Simon with his twin, Vision, creating a dangerous hybrid. The combined entity attacked Tony Stark, who managed to separate them, highlighting the challenges of Simon and Vision’s nearly identical brain engrams.

Target: Beast

As Krakoa rose as the new mutant nation, Simon’s old friend Hank McCoy went rogue to protect the island, prompting Simon to assist in countering his actions. Simon’s intervention prevented catastrophic damage, ultimately saving lives and collaborating with a cloned version of Hank. This arc reinforced Simon’s role as a steadfast protector, even amid complex moral dilemmas.

Avengers Emergency Response Squad

Simon was recruited by Steve Rogers into the Avengers Emergency Response Squad, alongside heroes like Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, Photon, and Lightning. He engaged in missions across Germany, New York’s North Border Island, and Puternicstan, combating villains such as the Nightstalkers, Victorious, and the Serpent Society.

Simon’s ionic composition allowed him to neutralize extreme threats, including drinking the entire Serpent Tears vat without harm. He also protected civilians during a charity soccer match interrupted by Tyrannus and his Tyrannoids, entering a mysterious Crimson Monolith to confront the danger head-on.

Later, while investigating Avengers Mansion with She-Hulk, Simon was affected by powerful magical cobwebs but cleverly summoned the mutant Somnus for assistance, demonstrating his ingenuity and continued adaptability as both hero and strategist.

Wonder Man: Attributes & Powers

  • Anionic Items: Objects with energies opposite to his ionic signature can inflict lasting damage.

  • Ionic Lock: Madame Masque’s device can temporarily or permanently suppress or drain his energy.

  • Extreme Pacifism: Following recovery from prior breakdowns, Simon often refuses to use violence, limiting his effectiveness in battle despite his immense power.
