When the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe begin to stir, the Avengers are not always the heroes who answer the call. Sometimes the threat is too ancient, too supernatural and too deeply connected to the forces of darkness for conventional superheroes to handle. That is where the Midnight Sons come in. Unlike traditional Marvel superhero teams, the Midnight Sons are a loose alliance of supernatural heroes, monsters, mystics and monster hunters who have, in one way or another, experienced darkness themselves. Their familiarity with the supernatural is precisely what makes them so effective against it. Marvel has described them as a group of heroes who have had their own encounters with damnation and use that experience to fight the very forces that threaten humanity.
The history of the Midnight Sons stretches far beyond their modern incarnation. Their story reaches back more than 20,000 years to the age of pre-Cataclysm Atlantis, when an ancient group known as the Order of the Midnight Sons, also associated with the Spirits of Vengeance, emerged to confront supernatural evil. Thousands of years later, Doctor Strange would bring together another collection of supernatural champions to face Lilith, the Mother of Demons, and her monstrous children, the Lilin. That alliance would eventually become known as the Midnight Sons.
What makes the Midnight Sons particularly fascinating is that they have never been a conventional superhero team. Their membership has constantly changed, their alliances have sometimes been uneasy, and many of their greatest battles have forced them to confront not only demons and monsters but also their own inner darkness. Over the years, Ghost Riders, Blade, Morbius, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Elsa Bloodstone, Doctor Voodoo, Man-Thing, Iron Fist, Werewolf by Night and numerous other supernatural characters have stood alongside one another when the Marvel Universe needed defenders capable of fighting threats that ordinary heroes could not even understand.
Marvel’s original Rise of the Midnight Sons storyline brought together Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers against Lilith and her children, establishing the supernatural team as one of Marvel’s most distinctive corners of the universe.
Long before the modern Midnight Sons existed, an ancient order was already fighting supernatural evil. More than 20,000 years ago, during the days of pre-Cataclysm Atlantis, a mysterious group of powerful beings joined forces as the Order of the Midnight Sons, also known as the Spirits of Vengeance. Their enemy was the demon Zarathos, whose power threatened the world alongside the demonic forces known as the Lilin and the Fallen. The ancient Order joined forces with another group known as the Blood in an attempt to stop Zarathos and his forces.
The battle did not end with a straightforward victory. The Order could not completely defeat Zarathos, so they instead imprisoned the demon inside the Medallion of Power, a mystical object that Zarathos had sought to control. The plan came with a terrible price because the members of the Order were trapped inside the Medallion as well. The Blood eventually shattered the mystical artifact so that nobody else could claim its power, scattering its fragments across history. According to Marvel’s account, Caretaker, a member of the Blood, became responsible for the pieces and passed them through two bloodlines over the centuries, with their descendants frequently becoming agents of vengeance such as the Ghost Riders.
This ancient history is important because it establishes one of the defining ideas behind the Midnight Sons: the battle between humanity and supernatural evil is far older than any individual hero. Ghost Rider, the Medallion of Power and the forces connected to Zarathos are all part of a much larger supernatural legacy that predates the modern Marvel Universe by thousands of years.
The modern Midnight Sons therefore did not appear out of nowhere. They inherited a name, a legacy and a supernatural conflict that had been unfolding for millennia.
The modern story of the Midnight Sons truly begins with the Nine, a group of supernatural heroes and allies assembled because of a prophecy concerning the return of Lilith, Mother of Demons, and her children, the Lilin. Doctor Strange understood that he could not confront Lilith directly without potentially weakening the dimensional barriers separating Earth from the Shadowside, the realm where many of Lilith’s children remained. Instead, Strange worked to bring together the individuals who could confront the threat on his behalf.
Ghost Rider Daniel Ketch and Johnny Blaze were sent to locate potential members of the Nine. Among those drawn into the conflict were Morbius, the Living Vampire, Victoria Montesi, Louise Hastings, Sam Buchanan, and the members of the Nightstalkers: Blade, Frank Drake and Hannibal King. The Darkhold Redeemers, particularly Montesi, Hastings and Buchanan, were focused on stopping the return of the Darkhold, the ancient book of dark magic whose influence would become deeply intertwined with the supernatural conflicts surrounding the Midnight Sons.
Marvel's own history of the team describes this alliance as a loose-knit confederation of mystically powered heroes assembled by Doctor Strange to act as humanity's first line of defence against Lilith and the Lilin. The original members included Daniel Ketch, Morbius, Johnny Blaze, Blade and the Nightstalkers, alongside the Darkhold Redeemers.
What made the Nine unusual was that they were never a perfectly harmonious group. Many of these characters had already experienced the supernatural in profoundly different ways, and some were openly hostile toward one another. They did not necessarily trust each other, and several were working together simply because the threat posed by the Lilin was more urgent than their personal disagreements.
The group was eventually drawn together during an incursion by the Lilin in Greenland. After the battle, Doctor Strange referred to them collectively as the Nine, even though the members were not initially a formally organized team. They were later assembled in the land of the Midnight Sun to confront Lilith and her existing children before she could release the rest of the Lilin from the Shadowside. The Nine succeeded in killing many of the Lilin and weakening Lilith before she disappeared.
The victory, however, was far from permanent.
The Nine continued to cross paths as Lilith and the Lilin repeatedly returned. At times they fought together; at other times they found themselves fighting one another. Blade himself was transformed into Switchblade through the influence of the Darkhold and had to be confronted by his former allies. The group also investigated supernatural threats such as Spider-X and eventually reunited when Lilith formed an alliance with Zarathos and reopened the Shadowside.
The consequences were devastating. Morbius became infected with Lilin blood and was manipulated by supernatural forces, ultimately killing Louise Hastings. The Lilin were eventually driven back into the Shadowside, but Zarathos and his followers, the Fallen, remained major threats. Ghost Rider was seemingly killed in battle with Zarathos, while Victoria Montesi's supernatural pregnancy involving Chthon led Doctor Strange to place her in stasis.
After Zarathos and the Fallen were finally defeated, the surviving members of the Nine and their allies reorganized themselves as the Midnight Sons, taking the name of the ancient order that had battled supernatural evil thousands of years earlier.
The transition from the Nine to the Midnight Sons represented more than a simple change of name. The team had survived betrayal, possession, death, demonic attacks and battles that pushed its members to the limits of their abilities. The Midnight Sons became Marvel's supernatural strike force, a group that could be called upon when the threat involved demons, vampires, dark magic, cursed objects, supernatural dimensions or forces that operated outside the normal rules of the Marvel Universe.
The original Rise of the Midnight Sons crossover remains one of the defining stories associated with the team. Marvel's official reading guide brings together Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance, Morbius: The Living Vampire, Darkhold: Pages from the Book of Sins and Nightstalkers, showing just how interconnected these supernatural characters and series were during the formation of the team.
The Midnight Sons were never simply "the Avengers with monsters." Their stories were darker, more horror-oriented and more concerned with supernatural consequences. The heroes themselves often carried curses, addictions, transformations or traumatic histories, which meant that every battle against evil could also become a battle against themselves.
The return of Lilith was one of the central events that brought the Midnight Sons together. According to Marvel's history, Lilith emerged from the belly of an ancient beast known as Leviathan, or Tiamat, and sought to tear open the barriers separating Earth from the Shadowside, where many of her children remained. Doctor Strange anticipated the threat and manipulated events so that a group of supernatural heroes would be ready to oppose her.
The resulting alliance brought together some of Marvel's most recognizable supernatural characters. Daniel Ketch's Ghost Rider represented the terrifying power of the Spirit of Vengeance. Johnny Blaze, once a Ghost Rider himself, brought years of experience fighting supernatural forces. Morbius occupied the uncomfortable space between human and monster, while Blade represented the other side of the supernatural conflict as a vampire hunter.
The Nightstalkers added another layer to the team. Blade, Frank Drake and Hannibal King approached supernatural threats from the perspective of hunters determined to eliminate them. Meanwhile, the Darkhold Redeemers pursued the dangerous mystical knowledge contained within the Darkhold. Their presence demonstrated just how broad the Midnight Sons' mission could become.
The roster was never permanent. Characters died, disappeared, changed sides, returned from death or simply moved on to other battles. Leaders changed as well, with figures such as Morbius and Wong taking command at different points. That fluidity became one of the Midnight Sons' defining characteristics.
The enemies of the Midnight Sons are exactly what one would expect from Marvel's supernatural corner of the universe, but the scale of those threats can be surprisingly enormous. Lilith and the Lilin are among their most important enemies, while Zarathos and Mephisto have also played major roles in the team's history. The Sons have confronted demonic organizations, supernatural cartels, vampires, cursed beings and threats emerging from alternate dimensions.
What makes these conflicts especially dangerous is that the Midnight Sons are not immune to supernatural corruption. Morbius, for example, was influenced by Lilin forces and became a danger to the very heroes he had once fought alongside. In another notorious episode, Blade was transformed into Switchblade after using the Darkhold to gain the power of the Demogorge.
That recurring theme gives Midnight Sons stories their distinctive identity. The line between hero and monster is often blurred. A character can spend an entire story fighting evil only to discover that the same darkness exists inside them.
The Midnight Sons have never been the only heroes fighting supernatural threats in the Marvel Universe. Many characters have battled Lilith's children, demons and other supernatural forces without even knowing that a larger war was taking place behind the scenes. Marvel identifies heroes such as Scarlet Witch, Devil-Slayer and Werewolf by Night as examples of characters who became involved in these conflicts without necessarily knowing the full extent of the Midnight Sons' activities.
Werewolf by Night eventually became an official member, while Vengeance, another supernatural character with a personal grudge against Ghost Rider, eventually put his vendetta aside to help the Midnight Sons fight the larger threat.
These unexpected alliances helped expand the supernatural side of Marvel. Instead of operating as an isolated group, the Midnight Sons gradually became connected to a much wider network of characters who existed on the fringes of the traditional superhero world.
Lilith understood that the Midnight Sons could become a serious obstacle to her plans, so she attempted to destroy the alliance before it could fully come together. One of her strategies involved using the Lilin known as Fang to poison Morbius, making him vulnerable to Lilith's influence. At the same time, she manipulated the Nightstalkers into attacking Ghost Rider through the intervention of her spawn Meatmarket.
The resulting conflict demonstrated exactly why the Midnight Sons were so difficult to control. Their members frequently disagreed, but when a greater supernatural threat appeared, they could still unite against it.
The Nightstalkers continued their campaign against supernatural threats, while Blade eventually used a portion of the Darkhold to summon the power of the Demogorge. The resulting transformation turned him into Switchblade, causing him to attack former allies. He was ultimately freed from the influence, but the incident reinforced one of the Midnight Sons' most persistent themes: supernatural power always comes with a price.
The Darkhold Redeemers also expanded their ranks, while Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze confronted Vengeance and discovered the connection between him and the fragments of the Medallion of Power.
Lilith's campaign grew even more dangerous when she regained her strength by feeding upon the corpses of her own children. She called the remaining Earthbound Lilin back to her side, eventually giving birth to the Lilin once again. She also allied herself with Centurious, the Soulless Man, and his demonic cartel in an attempt to obtain the Medallion of Power.
Meanwhile, Morbius continued to fall under Lilith's influence. Fang's blood inside his body developed a form of sentience known as Bloodthirst, which steadily increased its control over the Living Vampire. The Lilin Parasite even possessed and reanimated Morbius's lover, Martine Bancroft, further destabilizing him.
The conflict eventually reached the catacombs beneath Cypress Hills Cemetery, where Zarathos was freed from his imprisonment within Centurious. Lilith abandoned her former ally and aligned herself with the more powerful demon. As the Lilin spread across the world, other supernatural heroes such as Scarlet Witch, Devil-Slayer and Werewolf by Night became caught up in the growing chaos.
The battle ultimately became known as the Siege of Darkness, one of the defining conflicts in Midnight Sons history. The heroes were eventually driven back to Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, where Lilith's control over Morbius resulted in the murder of Louise Hastings. The Lilin also invaded the Sanctum, killing Imei Chang and temporarily destroying the building.
The Midnight Sons were pushed to their breaking point, but the war was not over.
The Midnight Sons eventually used the Medallion of Power against Lilith and her children, sending many of the Lilin back into the Shadowside. However, the victory immediately gave rise to another threat. The Fallen, members of the Blood who had pledged themselves to Zarathos, returned to Earth and joined their master.
Zarathos then reached the height of his power and seemingly killed Ghost Rider. The remaining Midnight Sons were forced to continue the fight without him. With assistance from the Blood, they eventually defeated the Fallen and appeared to destroy Zarathos as well, although Lilith escaped with her unborn child.
The final incarnation of the original Midnight Sons consisted of Johnny Blaze, Vengeance, Blade, Hannibal King, Morbius and a splinter aspect of Doctor Strange known simply as Strange. Frank Drake was present but was not allowed to participate in the final pact because Strange and Caretaker considered him too human to qualify.
This pact with Caretaker helped cement the Midnight Sons as a genuine supernatural unit rather than simply a collection of heroes who happened to be fighting the same enemy. Afterward, however, the members gradually went their separate ways. Some of their associated teams experienced deaths, resurrections and crises of faith, while others became entangled in entirely new supernatural conflicts.
The end of the original conflict did not mean the end of the Midnight Sons' legacy. Many of the characters remained active independently, continuing to fight supernatural threats across the Marvel Universe.
Zarathos eventually reconstituted himself within Johnny Blaze, while Lilith continued to trouble characters such as Doctor Strange, Jennifer Kale, Satana Hellstrom and Topaz. The child Lilith had with Zarathos disappeared from the story for a time, leaving another unresolved thread in the mythology.
Morbius eventually removed Bloodthirst from his body through a full-body blood transfusion and continued fighting the Lilin. Daniel Ketch's Ghost Rider experienced his own extraordinary journey, including becoming ruler of Hell before disappearing and later returning as an agent of Zadkiel.
Vengeance's story ended tragically when he descended into madness and eventually took his own life, leaving him trapped in the Hell dimension that Ghost Rider had once ruled. The strange incarnation of Doctor Strange was eventually reunited with the original Sorcerer Supreme, while Dan Ketch later killed Caretaker. Caretaker's granddaughter, former nun Sister Sara, subsequently inherited the role.
The supernatural legacy continued to evolve even as the original team ceased operating as a permanent unit.
One of the strangest Midnight Sons missions came when a zombie-producing virus from Earth-2149, the reality associated with Marvel Zombies, reached Earth-616. The organization A.R.M.O.R., the Alternate Reality Monitoring and Operational Response Agency, authorized Morbius to create a new version of the Midnight Sons to investigate and contain the outbreak.
Morbius recruited Hellstorm, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night and Jennifer Kale, assembling a team that was considerably different from the original Midnight Sons but perfectly suited to a zombie crisis.
Among the undead escaping the outbreak was Simon Garth, a voodoo zombie carrying the head of Zombie Deadpool. Morbius developed a vaccine to protect his team, and they eventually tracked the infected beings to the island nation of Taino.
There, the zombies were captured by the voodoo sorcerer Black Talon, who intended to sell the zombie virus to Parker Robbins, the Hood. The Hood initially viewed the virus as a potential threat to his criminal interests, but Dormammu, the ruler of the Dark Dimension and the source of the Hood's powers, ordered him to acquire it.
The Midnight Sons interrupted the transaction, but the crisis escalated rapidly. Z-Pool escaped and infected Talon's followers, triggering another outbreak. Morbius attempted to use his vaccine, but the virus mutated into a deadly strain capable of existing as a free-floating cloud.
Werewolf by Night's human half became infected, causing him to attack Jennifer Kale. Kale turned to Dormammu for assistance, only to become possessed by the Dark Dimension's ruler. Hellstorm helped free her from Dormammu's influence, and the pair sent him back to his realm.
Eventually, the team discovered a way to freeze the virus cloud and transfer its hive mind into Simon Garth. Garth was placed into containment, Jack Russell was cured, and the immediate crisis was brought under control.
Marvel's own history of Morbius confirms that he later assembled a Midnight Sons team consisting of Werewolf by Night, Jennifer Kale, Man-Thing and Daimon Hellstrom to combat the zombie threat, with Morbius also developing a vaccine to protect the team from the virus.
Another major chapter in the team's history unfolded in Las Vegas when Doctor Strange unintentionally created a gateway that allowed Mephisto, the Hell-Lord and collector of souls, to enter the city. Mephisto wasted no time exploiting the situation, corrupting citizens and several Avengers who happened to be present.
Wong responded by assembling another incarnation of the Midnight Sons, this time bringing together Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze, Blade, Doctor Voodoo, Elsa Bloodstone, Iron Fist, Man-Thing and Mr. Knight, with the ghost of Doctor Strange's deceased dog, Bats, also becoming involved.
The group fought Mephisto's forces for hours, eventually discovering that several heroes under Mephisto's influence were willing to turn against him. Wong had also placed Johnny Blaze on the throne of Hell, replacing Mephisto and giving the Midnight Sons an unexpected source of power.
Mephisto retaliated by opening the ground and attempting to confront Blaze in Hell. Wong fell into the abyss, and Man-Thing caught him, but Wong ultimately insisted that he be released so he could continue the fight. Blaze later helped Wong land safely, and the two coordinated their efforts from Hell while Doctor Strange used the combined power of the Avengers to fight Mephisto.
Although Mephisto disappeared before Strange could strike him with lightning, Blaze eventually returned after spending what amounted to a century in Hell's prison alongside a very unhappy group of Ghost Riders. The Midnight Sons and the Avengers eventually succeeded in imprisoning Mephisto within a magically fortified prison overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.
One of the most distinctive pieces of Midnight Sons mythology is the team's supernatural Brand. The symbol is a small cross with a sharp downward point and traces its origins to the ancient Order of the Midnight Sons.
The Brand was burned into the arms of members of the ancient Order and later appeared on some of the modern Midnight Sons during their battles against Zarathos. Its purpose is essentially supernatural communication: it can summon its bearers back together when a crisis of enormous importance emerges.
The Brand remains invisible under normal circumstances, but when the Midnight Sons are needed, it activates. Its summons is anything but comfortable, with the Brand said to hurt intensely until the wearer answers the call. Frank Drake was denied the Brand because he was considered too human at the time.
That detail perfectly captures what makes the Midnight Sons different from many other Marvel teams. Membership is not simply about being powerful enough to fight alongside the others. The supernatural nature of the group itself can become a test of whether a character truly belongs.
The Midnight Sons have never relied on a single standardized arsenal because their members come from wildly different backgrounds. Their personal weapons and abilities form the bulk of the team's combat capabilities, ranging from Blade's vampire-hunting equipment and Ghost Rider's supernatural powers to the mystical abilities of characters such as Doctor Voodoo and Man-Thing.
Transportation can be equally supernatural. Mystical teleportation has frequently been used to move the team instantaneously, including between dimensions when circumstances require it. The Hellcycles associated with the Spirits of Vengeance also remain one of the most recognizable forms of transportation connected to the Midnight Sons and Ghost Rider mythology.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Midnight Sons is that their membership has never been as straightforward as a standard superhero roster. Marvel's mythology has suggested that the organization may have existed in some form for decades and may actually have been considerably larger than initially believed. Victoria Montesi and Yuvraj Singh indicated that the Sons of Midnight had been active for at least four decades and represented a larger organization than previously understood.
This idea helps explain why characters who never formally joined the core group could still become involved in its battles. The Midnight Sons are better understood as a supernatural network or legacy than as a permanent seven-person superhero squad.
That distinction also makes the team unusually flexible. Whenever Marvel needs a group capable of dealing with vampires, demons, cursed objects, dark magic, zombies or threats from other dimensions, the Midnight Sons concept can be rebuilt around the characters best suited to the crisis.
The Midnight Sons legacy eventually evolved into the Midnight Suns, a newer team with a slightly different identity. The most recent iteration was brought together after Zoe Laveau, a student at Strange Academy, accidentally projected a vision that reached supernatural characters throughout the Marvel Universe.
That supernatural call brought together Blade, Kushala, Magik, Nico Minoru and Wolverine, with the group adopting the name Midnight Suns.
Marvel's official collection of Midnight Suns confirms the five-issue series and its core lineup of Magik, Wolverine, Blade, Spirit Rider and Nico Minoru. The story centers on a dark prophecy, terrifying new villains and a threat that forces the team into one of the darkest supernatural adventures in Marvel's history.
The change from Sons to Suns is more than a cosmetic variation. It reflects how Marvel's supernatural heroes have evolved and expanded. The original Midnight Sons were deeply rooted in the horror comics of the 1990s, particularly Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold. The Midnight Suns take that foundation and introduce newer characters, new mystical threats and a broader representation of Marvel's supernatural world.
Yet the philosophy remains familiar: when the threat comes from somewhere ordinary superheroes cannot easily reach, Marvel turns to the heroes who understand the darkness.
The Midnight Sons occupy a unique place in Marvel history because they connect several genres that rarely share the same spotlight. Their stories combine superhero action with horror, occult fantasy, vampire mythology, demonic lore, supernatural mystery and alternate realities.
Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness. Almost every member has some connection to the darkness they fight. Ghost Rider is powered by supernatural vengeance. Morbius is a living vampire. Blade hunts creatures that resemble the monster he is constantly surrounded by. Man-Thing exists at the intersection of humanity and the supernatural. Doctor Voodoo draws upon powerful mystical traditions. Elsa Bloodstone was raised to hunt monsters. Moon Knight has repeatedly crossed paths with supernatural and psychological horrors.
That makes the Midnight Sons stories more personal than a conventional battle between heroes and villains. The characters are not standing outside the darkness and throwing punches at it. They are often standing directly inside it.
Marvel's original Rise of the Midnight Sons material emphasized this idea by bringing together heroes such as Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers against Lilith and her children.
The team's history also demonstrates why supernatural Marvel stories can be so unpredictable. Characters die and return, heroes become possessed, villains become temporary allies, dimensions collapse, ancient artifacts resurface and seemingly defeated demons find new ways to return.
Even Doctor Strange, one of Marvel's most powerful mystics, has repeatedly needed the assistance of the Midnight Sons when supernatural threats become too dangerous for him to handle alone. Marvel's published collections document multiple stories in which Doctor Strange and the Midnight Sons face supernatural crises together, including the Siege of Darkness era.
More than three decades after their most famous stories began, the Midnight Sons remain one of Marvel's most distinctive supernatural concepts. They have never needed to resemble the Avengers or the X-Men because their appeal comes from something completely different.
The Avengers protect the world from extraordinary threats. The X-Men defend a world struggling to understand mutants. The Midnight Sons protect the world from the things lurking underneath it.
Their enemies are the monsters that cannot always be defeated by strength alone. Their battles take place in graveyards, cursed cities, ancient ruins, mystical dimensions, Hell itself and the shadowy corners of the Marvel Universe. Their members are often damaged, haunted or transformed, but that is precisely why they can face threats that would overwhelm more traditional heroes.
From the ancient Order of the Midnight Sons in pre-Cataclysm Atlantis to Doctor Strange's formation of the Nine, from the original battles against Lilith and Zarathos to the zombie crisis, Mephisto's takeover of Las Vegas and the later rise of the Midnight Suns, the concept has continued to evolve without losing its central identity.
At its heart, the Midnight Sons is a story about people who know what darkness looks like because they have experienced it themselves. They are heroes, hunters, monsters and mystics brought together not because they have everything in common, but because they understand what happens when the supernatural is allowed to run unchecked.
And perhaps that is why the Midnight Sons remain so compelling. They are not heroes who simply enter the darkness when duty calls. They are heroes who already live close to it, know its dangers intimately and are willing to risk losing themselves to keep it from consuming everyone else.
The Midnight Sons are a supernatural alliance of Marvel heroes, monster hunters, mystics and other characters who come together to fight powerful supernatural threats. The team is particularly associated with enemies such as Lilith, the Lilin, Zarathos and Mephisto.
The original modern Midnight Sons were connected to Doctor Strange’s Nine and included supernatural heroes and groups such as Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers. Their purpose was to stop Lilith and her demonic children, the Lilin.
There has not always been one permanent leader of the Midnight Sons. Doctor Strange played a major role in bringing the original group together, while Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze, Morbius and Wong have also led different incarnations of the team.
The Midnight Sons were created to confront supernatural and demonic threats that conventional superhero teams could struggle to handle. Their earliest modern mission centered on stopping Lilith, the Mother of Demons, and her children, the Lilin, from breaking through the barriers between Earth and the Shadowside.
Lilith, Mother of Demons, is one of the most important villains in Midnight Sons history. She is an ancient supernatural being who seeks to unleash her children, the Lilin, upon Earth and has repeatedly manipulated heroes and supernatural forces in her attempts to expand her influence.
Ghost Rider is one of the most iconic characters associated with the Midnight Sons. Both Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch played important roles in the team's history, while the ancient Spirits of Vengeance are also connected to the original Order of the Midnight Sons.
Yes. Blade is one of the most prominent and recurring members of the Midnight Sons. As a vampire hunter with extensive experience fighting supernatural creatures, he is particularly well suited to the team's mission against vampires, demons and other supernatural threats.
Doctor Strange has played a crucial role in the history of the Midnight Sons. He assembled the original Nine because he could not directly confront Lilith without risking further damage to the dimensional barriers separating Earth from the Shadowside.
The Darkhold is an ancient and extremely dangerous book of dark magic that plays an important role in Midnight Sons history. The Darkhold Redeemers were among the supernatural heroes connected to the original team, while the Darkhold also contributed to Blade's transformation into Switchblade.
The Midnight Sons have fought numerous supernatural villains, including Lilith, the Lilin, Zarathos, the Fallen and Mephisto. Their enemies have also included demonic organizations, supernatural cartels, vampires, zombies and threats from alternate dimensions.
Siege of Darkness is one of the defining conflicts in Midnight Sons history. The storyline brings the supernatural heroes into a major confrontation with Lilith, the Lilin and Zarathos, pushing the Midnight Sons to one of their most dangerous battles.
The Order of the Midnight Sons was an ancient group associated with the Spirits of Vengeance that existed more than 20,000 years ago during the era of pre-Cataclysm Atlantis. The Order fought Zarathos and his forces and became connected to the mythology surrounding the Medallion of Power.
The Medallion of Power is a powerful mystical artifact connected to the ancient Order of the Midnight Sons, Zarathos and the Spirits of Vengeance. The ancient Order used it to imprison Zarathos, but its members became trapped inside as well, leading the Blood to shatter the artifact.
The Midnight Sons Brand is a supernatural symbol resembling a small cross with a sharp downward point. It was associated with the ancient Order and later appeared on members of the modern Midnight Sons. The Brand can summon its wearers together when the team is desperately needed and remains invisible until activated.
The Nine were a group of supernatural characters brought together by Doctor Strange to oppose Lilith and the Lilin. The group included characters connected to Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers before eventually evolving into the Midnight Sons.
The Midnight Sons and Midnight Suns are closely connected but are not exactly the same team. The Midnight Suns represent a later evolution of Marvel's supernatural-team concept, featuring characters including Blade, Kushala, Magik, Nico Minoru and Wolverine.
The Midnight Suns are a newer supernatural Marvel team formed after a vision projected by Strange Academy student Zoe Laveau reached supernatural characters across the Marvel Universe. The new lineup includes Blade, Kushala, Magik, Nico Minoru and Wolverine.
Yes. Moon Knight, specifically the Mr. Knight persona of Marc Spector, was part of the Midnight Sons assembled during the supernatural crisis involving Mephisto in Las Vegas. The team also included Ghost Rider, Blade, Doctor Voodoo, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing and Iron Fist.
Yes. Mephisto became the central threat in another major Midnight Sons story when a supernatural gateway in Las Vegas allowed him to enter the city. Wong assembled a new Midnight Sons team to fight Mephisto and his forces, eventually helping imprison the Hell-Lord in a magically fortified prison.
Yes. A later incarnation of the Midnight Sons was formed to deal with a zombie virus originating from Earth-2149, the reality associated with Marvel's zombie apocalypse. Morbius led a team including Hellstorm, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night and Jennifer Kale to contain the outbreak.
Some of the most recognizable characters associated with the Midnight Sons include Ghost Rider, Blade, Morbius, Doctor Strange, Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Doctor Voodoo, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, Moon Knight, Iron Fist and Werewolf by Night. The roster has changed considerably across different incarnations.
The Avengers generally deal with major superhero threats, while the Midnight Sons specialize in supernatural dangers such as demons, vampires, dark magic, cursed artifacts, zombies and threats from other dimensions. The Midnight Sons also tend to consist of characters who have personal connections to the darkness they fight.
The Midnight Sons stand apart because they combine superhero storytelling with horror, supernatural fantasy and occult mythology. Many of their members are themselves supernatural beings, monster hunters or characters carrying supernatural curses, making their battles against darkness deeply personal.
A strong starting point is Rise of the Midnight Sons, which introduces the core supernatural conflict involving Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade, the Nightstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers. From there, readers can explore the larger Siege of Darkness storyline and later Midnight Sons incarnations. Marvel's official reading guide provides a useful entry point into the original crossover.
The history of the Midnight Sons begins with an ancient Order dating back more than 20,000 years, continues through Doctor Strange's formation of the Nine, and develops into the modern Midnight Sons through battles against Lilith, the Lilin, Zarathos and the Fallen. Later incarnations confronted threats including zombies and Mephisto, while the concept eventually evolved into the Midnight Suns.
