HBO’s second teaser for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has finally arrived, and if the first trailer was about introducing us to this new version of the Wizarding World, the latest footage feels much more interested in showing us what it will actually be like to live inside it. There are classrooms, school timetables, Quidditch matches, dormitory chaos, magical homework, friendships, rivalries, creatures, secret nighttime adventures and dozens of tiny details that are incredibly easy to miss if you are simply watching the trailer for the big moments.

The eight-episode first season is officially adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with the series scheduled to debut at Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max where available. The new season stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, with Francesca Gardiner serving as writer and showrunner and Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. In India, the HBO Max offering is available through JioHotstar, which has confirmed the upcoming Harry Potter series as part of its 2026 slate.

What makes this second teaser particularly fascinating, though, is how much of the material is not simply recreating scenes audiences already know from the films. Some moments are extremely faithful to the book, some expand on tiny details that the movies barely had time for, and others appear to give us completely new perspectives on characters who were previously seen almost exclusively through Harry’s eyes. So, after going through the trailer repeatedly, here is a closer look at the biggest details, Easter eggs, book references and pieces of possible foreshadowing hiding in HBO’s latest Harry Potter footage.

Ron Weasley’s Hogwarts Letter Brings Us to the Burrow Much Earlier

One of the biggest revelations in the trailer is something that sounds incredibly simple until you remember the structure of the original story: we are going to see Ron Weasley open his Hogwarts letter at the Burrow during Season 1. That means HBO is bringing audiences to the Weasley family home during Philosopher’s Stone, even though the Burrow is not actually visited in the book until Chamber of Secrets. The trailer therefore appears to be deliberately expanding the timeline and allowing us to experience Ron’s side of the story before Harry ever meets him.

That is a particularly interesting creative decision because the television format gives HBO room to explore perspectives that the original novel does not spend much time with. The first Harry Potter book is overwhelmingly experienced through Harry, whereas the series can potentially step away from him and show what Ron, Hermione and perhaps even Draco are doing when Harry is not around. There have already been clues suggesting that Draco Malfoy could receive some of that treatment as well, which would give the series a chance to make its supporting characters feel more complete and independent.

The Burrow appearing this early also raises an obvious question about Arthur Weasley. In both the books and the films, Arthur does not properly enter the story until Chamber of Secrets, so bringing audiences to the Weasley home in the first season might seem like the perfect opportunity to introduce him earlier. However, Arthur’s casting has not been announced, so it remains entirely possible that the series simply establishes that he is at work during the scenes we see. At this point, there is no reason to assume that Arthur will definitely appear in Season 1.

 

There is another wonderfully strange little detail in the same sequence: the Weasleys’ Hogwarts letters appear noticeably smaller than Harry’s. Two letters can be seen on the table, and when they are compared with nearby objects, they look surprisingly tiny.

One possible explanation is that the smaller letters are simply a visual design choice, but there is also a fun theory that perhaps the letters have been made smaller because there are so many Weasley children receiving Hogwarts correspondence that the owls have an easier time carrying them. There is no confirmation that this is the reason, but it is exactly the sort of tiny world-building detail that invites fans to speculate.

Percy Weasley Finally Gets His Moment

The same Burrow sequence also gives us our first proper glimpse of Percy Weasley, and the detail that immediately stands out is his prefect badge. Percy is shown sitting with the family while Fred and George are busy creating their usual chaos, but Percy is much more interested in proudly displaying his new status.

It is a small moment, but it fits the timeline perfectly. Percy has become a Gryffindor prefect just as Ron is preparing to begin his own first year at Hogwarts, and the trailer appears to be giving that family dynamic a little more room than the films ever could. It also helps that Percy has been made visually distinctive from Fred and George. The Weasley brothers obviously need to look like they belong to the same family, but Percy, Fred and George are distinct enough that viewers can immediately tell who is who.

Hermione Granger’s Hogwarts Story Begins Before Harry Meets Her

Another major change comes aboard the Hogwarts Express. Instead of introducing Hermione to us for the first time when she enters Harry and Ron’s compartment, the series appears to show Hermione interacting with other students before she ever meets the boys.

Hermione approaches Lavender Brown and Hannah Abbott and talks to them about their summer reading, which gives us a glimpse of Hermione trying to make friends before the Golden Trio has even formed. That may sound like a minor adjustment, but it changes how we understand her. In the books and films, Hermione’s introduction is filtered almost entirely through Harry and Ron. Here, we are getting to see her as a young girl who has only recently discovered that she is a witch and is trying to navigate a world she knows almost nothing about.

That perspective is particularly important because Hermione grew up in the Muggle world. She has spent her life outside wizarding society, and her obsessive studying suddenly makes even more sense when you consider the position she is walking into. She has prepared herself by reading everything she can because she does not want to arrive at Hogwarts completely ignorant while everyone else seems to understand the rules already. The train journey may therefore represent one of her first experiences navigating the Wizarding World without her parents or another adult guiding her.

The inclusion of Hannah Abbott and Lavender Brown also suggests that HBO may be establishing supporting characters considerably earlier than the films did. Lavender is present in the books from the first year onward, but the films did not give her much of a distinct identity until Half-Blood Prince, when her relationship with Ron suddenly became important. Giving her more dialogue and screen time from the beginning could make that later storyline considerably more meaningful because audiences will already have an opinion about her.

It also fits one of the biggest advantages of the television format. HBO has eight episodes to tell the first book, rather than having to compress an enormous amount of material into a single feature film. That gives the series room to let side characters breathe, allowing Hogwarts to feel populated by actual students rather than people who only exist when Harry happens to look in their direction.

Dean Thomas’ West Ham Posters Are a Brilliant Background Easter Egg

Speaking of students having lives outside Harry, there is a fantastic little detail hidden in the Gryffindor dormitory. If you look closely at the walls, you can apparently see West Ham United posters.

Those posters almost certainly belong to Dean Thomas, who is famously a huge Muggle football fan in the books and specifically supports West Ham United. This is exactly the kind of Easter egg that can disappear completely if you are not looking for it. It does not affect the story, it does not require dialogue and most viewers could watch the scene without ever noticing it, but it instantly communicates something about Dean as a person.

It is also another example of HBO restoring pieces of characterisation that the films had little time to emphasise. The official Harry Potter site has now highlighted the West Ham posters as part of the new teaser’s Easter eggs, confirming that this detail was intentionally carried over from the books.

Neville Longbottom Is Already Showing His Talent for Herbology

The Herbology classroom contains another detail that becomes much more interesting when you know where Neville’s story eventually goes. Neville appears to be unusually comfortable handling the enormous plant he pulls from his pot, while some of the other students struggle considerably more.

The plant has been identified in the trailer coverage as a Mangelwurzel, and the sequence is a lovely piece of early foreshadowing for Neville. He may lack confidence and struggle in plenty of areas during his first year, but Herbology is one subject where he begins to demonstrate genuine ability. That talent becomes increasingly important as the story progresses, eventually contributing to the person Neville becomes later in the series.

The official Harry Potter website has also specifically called attention to Neville’s Herbology moment, as well as the enormous plant he pulls from his pot.

Dean and Seamus Are Actually Living in the Background

While Neville is wrestling with his plant, Dean Thomas and Seamus Finnigan appear to be messing around with their own, apparently treating it like a magical version of hot potato.

That tiny bit of background business might be one of the most important details in the entire trailer from a world-building perspective. These students are not simply standing behind Harry waiting for the plot to happen. They are talking, playing around, studying and having their own experiences.

That makes Hogwarts feel much more like an actual school. Every student should theoretically have a life that continues even when Harry is not looking at them, and these little background moments help communicate exactly that. The series seems determined to make Hogwarts feel inhabited rather than staged.

Seamus, in particular, looks like he could become one of the breakout supporting characters. He has only a small amount of dialogue in the trailer, but his interactions with Dean suggest that the casting has captured the mischievous energy that makes him so memorable. There is every reason to think that the series could give Seamus and Dean more room to become recognisable characters in their own right.

Ron’s Chudley Cannons Badge Is a Perfect Character Detail

One of the cleanest Easter eggs appears during a shot of Harry hugging Ron after Quidditch. Look carefully at Ron’s sleeve and there appears to be a Chudley Cannons badge.

The Chudley Cannons are Ron’s favourite professional Quidditch team, despite their famously terrible record. Ron continues supporting them anyway, and his bedroom at the Burrow is decorated in their orange colours. Including the badge here is therefore about more than Quidditch fandom. It instantly tells us that Ron has grown up immersed in wizarding culture.

That was something the films sometimes struggled to communicate because there simply was not enough time to include every little piece of Ron’s personality. The series has a much better opportunity to establish these details naturally, allowing audiences to understand what makes Ron Ron before the larger story takes over.

Is “Acufors” a Brand-New Harry Potter Spell?

One of the most intriguing discoveries comes during the Transfiguration lesson. Harry and Ron appear to be attempting one of their earliest magical exercises, with matches clearly visible on the desks in front of them.

If you listen closely, Harry appears to mutter “Acufors”. The official Harry Potter website has since confirmed that this is indeed the incantation being spoken in the trailer.

The fascinating part is that “Acufors” does not appear to be a previously established spell from the main canon. One possible point of comparison is Aviors, an existing transformation spell associated primarily with the video games, but that spell has a completely different effect. Here, Harry appears to be attempting the famous first-year Transfiguration exercise in which students are asked to transform a match into a needle.

That means “Acufors” could potentially be an entirely new incantation created specifically for the HBO series. The books describe numerous magical exercises without always giving readers the exact words students would use to perform them, giving the television adaptation room to flesh out parts of magical education that were previously left unexplored.

The official site itself has now highlighted “Acufors” as part of the Transfiguration sequence, making this one of the clearest examples of HBO adding detail around something that the book described without necessarily spelling out every magical component.

The Match-to-Needle Transfiguration Lesson Is Exceptionally Book Accurate

The wider Transfiguration scene is just as exciting as the new incantation. Matches can be seen on the students’ desks as they point their wands towards them, strongly indicating that this is the famous match-to-needle exercise from Philosopher’s Stone.

The lesson is important because it demonstrates how difficult Transfiguration actually is. Most of the class struggles, while Hermione is the first student to make meaningful progress, eventually managing to give her match a pointed end and a silvery appearance.

This is exactly the sort of classroom detail that can make the series feel more faithful to the book without simply reproducing the film. Rather than racing through magical education because the story needs to get somewhere else, HBO appears willing to show the students actually learning.

HBO’s Wand Movements Could Completely Change How Magic Feels

The Transfiguration scene also reveals something broader about how magic itself may be portrayed. The students appear to use much more deliberate hand and wand movements than we are accustomed to seeing in the films.

Instead of simply pointing a wand and firing a spell, there appears to be an actual physical technique involved. Hermione’s spellcasting is especially noticeable because she uses a pronounced movement involving her hand and arm.

It is too early to know whether different spells will require different movements or whether different characters will develop individual casting styles. It could even simply be part of Hermione’s personality. But if the series does establish distinct approaches to spellcasting, it could make magic feel considerably more like a learned discipline.

That would fit the books nicely because magical ability is not presented as something that simply happens when a character waves a wand. Students have to learn pronunciation, wand movements, concentration and technique. The famous “Swish and Flick” instruction from the films is only the beginning of what could become a much richer visual language for magic.

The Sorting Hat Looks Exactly as Old as It Should

Another detail that book fans are going to appreciate is the Sorting Hat itself. When it begins speaking, its mouth appears to form from a rip near the brim.

That is remarkably close to the way the hat is described in Philosopher’s Stone, where a rip opens near the brim like a mouth. The HBO version also looks considerably older, tattier and more misshapen than the movie version, which makes sense for an object that has supposedly been sorting Hogwarts students for roughly a thousand years.

The new design therefore feels less polished and theatrical and more like an ancient magical object that has been sitting around the castle for centuries.

Professor Quirrell Looks Very Different This Time

The trailer finally gives us a clearer look at Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, and the immediate impression is that HBO is taking him in a different visual direction.

He looks harsher, more serious and perhaps even slightly meaner than the Quirrell audiences remember from the films. He is seen sitting behind Professor McGonagall at the staff table during the Sorting Ceremony, and his clothing is noticeably different.

There is also one enormous costume change that fans are going to notice immediately: the familiar oversized purple turban from the films does not appear to be there. Quirrell does still seem to have something covering his head, which is obviously significant given what is concealed beneath it, but HBO appears to be changing the exact visual design of his disguise.

The purple turban became one of the most recognisable elements of movie Quirrell, so it will be strange not to see it, but there is no reason every costume detail has to be identical to the films. What matters is whether the underlying characterisation and eventual reveal remain intact.

The Hogwarts Timetable Might Be One of the Best Details in the Trailer

If there is one detail that perfectly represents what this television adaptation can do differently, it may be the Hogwarts timetable.

The trailer gives us a proper look at the students’ school schedules, including subjects such as Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology, History of Magic, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy and Flying. There are also blocks marked for prep, games and sporting fixtures.

That might sound hilariously mundane for a fantasy series, but that is precisely why it is exciting. Hogwarts is a school. Students should have schedules, homework, free periods, games and ordinary stretches of time where they are not fighting for their lives.

The timetable also appears to include longer blocks for subjects such as Potions, which fits with the books’ references to double Potions lessons. Gryffindor and Slytherin famously share Potions, creating another opportunity for Harry, Ron and Hermione to interact with Draco and the other Slytherins.

There has also been speculation that the colour coding on the timetable corresponds to the houses that Gryffindor shares particular classes with. Potions appears green, potentially reflecting Slytherin; Herbology appears yellow, potentially reflecting Hufflepuff; Charms appears blue, potentially reflecting Ravenclaw; and red blocks could represent classes Gryffindor attends alone. This is a fascinating possibility, but it should remain a theory until the timetable can be examined clearly enough to confirm the pattern.

What matters more is that somebody appears to have thought about Hogwarts as an actual functioning school rather than simply a series of rooms Harry enters when the plot requires it.

The House Point Hourglasses Are Finally Visible

Look into the background around the Great Hall and you may notice something that the films largely left as dialogue: the Hogwarts house-point counters.

In the books, each house has a giant magical hourglass-like container filled with coloured gemstones that rise and fall as points are awarded or deducted. The system gives students and viewers a physical representation of the House Cup competition.

The films talked constantly about points but never really gave us the same visual representation. HBO appears to be restoring that detail, and it is exactly the sort of seemingly insignificant piece of world-building that can make Hogwarts feel more authentic.

Professor McGonagall: More Than Just a Familiar Face

Professor Minerva McGonagall is one of the most intriguing Hogwarts figures to emerge in the new trailer, with several details connecting her directly to Harry’s first year. She can be seen leading the first-year students toward the Sorting Ceremony, while the four enormous House Point hourglasses appear in the background. These magical counters are a particularly satisfying book detail, as Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff each have their own enchanted counter tracking the points awarded or deducted throughout the school year.

McGonagall also features prominently in one of the trailer’s most recognisable classroom moments. During the Transfiguration lesson, Harry and Ron appear to be attempting the famous first-year exercise in which students must transform a match into a needle. It is a deceptively difficult task that demonstrates just how challenging Transfiguration can be, with Hermione already showing her natural talent for the subject. Bringing this moment to the screen gives fans another example of the HBO series expanding on the everyday Hogwarts experience rather than focusing exclusively on the story’s biggest events.

Her connection to Harry’s Quidditch journey is equally important. After witnessing Harry’s natural ability on a broom, McGonagall is the professor who helps set his Quidditch career in motion, leading to Harry receiving his Nimbus 2000 and becoming Gryffindor’s Seeker. These seemingly small details help establish McGonagall as a much more active presence in Harry’s first year than simply the stern professor standing at the front of the classroom.

Professor Snape: A Small Detail With Big Significance

Even a brief glimpse or reference to Snape in this context carries plenty of weight for fans of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The Invisibility Cloak, nighttime corridors and Harry’s encounters with Hogwarts staff all contribute to the mysterious atmosphere surrounding his first year. It also helps establish Snape as part of the constant sense of danger and suspicion that follows Harry throughout the story.

Dumbledore: A Tiny Detail That Connects Back to the Books

Albus Dumbledore receives a much smaller mention, but his connection to Hogwarts’ House Points makes the detail worth noting. The enormous House Point counters seen around the castle immediately bring to mind the famous conclusion of Philosopher’s Stone, when Dumbledore awards Gryffindor a dramatic collection of last-minute points and completely changes the final house standings.

It is a small connection rather than a major Dumbledore reveal, but that is precisely what makes it fun. The new series appears increasingly interested in recreating the little pieces of Hogwarts life that helped make the books feel so immersive, and the House Point system is one of those details that longtime readers will instantly recognise.

The Great Hall Food Finally Gets to Show Off

The trailer also gives us another familiar piece of Hogwarts magic when food appears across the Great Hall tables, seemingly arriving and settling into place through magic.

It is an easy moment to overlook because the Great Hall itself is so visually spectacular, but these little magical routines are what make Hogwarts feel different from an ordinary school. The series appears increasingly interested in showing those everyday magical details rather than treating magic purely as a tool for major plot moments.

The New Wizard’s Chess Looks Different but Familiar

Then there is Wizard’s Chess.

The HBO version does not look identical to the movie version, but it still immediately feels recognisable. The pieces appear shorter and squarer, with a hand-carved appearance that suggests stone or wood rather than something manufactured to look perfectly polished.

That design fits with the more natural approach to magic that has been discussed around the production. The behind-the-scenes Finding Harry material has highlighted the importance of nature, organic textures and the idea that magic should feel connected to the physical environment around Hogwarts.

The actual chess effects also look suitably brutal, with pieces physically attacking and destroying one another. It is familiar enough to trigger memories of the original film while still having its own identity.

Ron Playing Wizard’s Chess Is Quietly Important Foreshadowing

The trailer also shows Harry and Ron playing Wizard’s Chess over Christmas, and this seemingly harmless scene could be doing much more than simply showing the boys hanging out.

Wizard’s Chess is one of Ron’s genuine talents. When the trio eventually reaches the giant enchanted chessboard protecting the Philosopher’s Stone, Ron immediately understands how they need to play and ultimately sacrifices himself so that Harry can continue.

Showing Ron playing chess earlier in the season therefore establishes that ability before it becomes crucial to the climax. It is exactly the kind of foreshadowing that becomes more satisfying when the audience recognises why a seemingly ordinary scene mattered.

The Midnight Duel May Finally Be Restored

One of the most exciting discoveries in the second transcript is the possibility that HBO is restoring the Midnight Duel, a sequence from Philosopher’s Stone that the original film heavily simplified.

In the book, Draco challenges Harry to meet him at midnight in the trophy room. Harry and Ron sneak out to confront him, Hermione follows because she is desperately trying to prevent them from getting expelled, and Neville ultimately becomes involved as well.

The trailer appears to show Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville running through Hogwarts at night, while another glimpse appears to show Filch searching the trophy room. If those shots are connected, they could be evidence that HBO is restoring the complete sequence rather than simply having the children randomly stumble upon Fluffy.

That would be a significant improvement for Neville’s role in the early story because he is much more involved in this part of the book than the film adaptation suggests.

Filch May Be Searching the Trophy Room

The possible Filch shot becomes particularly interesting when placed beside the Midnight Duel theory. Paul Whitehouse has not been shown extensively as Argus Filch in the trailers so far, but there appears to be a glimpse of him from behind, holding a lantern and searching the castle.

If this is indeed Filch in the trophy room, it would make perfect sense within the book sequence. Draco sets Harry up, Filch searches for the students after they leave their dormitories, and the children are forced to run before eventually finding themselves in the Forbidden Corridor.

Filch himself also appears visually different from the movie version. His hair seems shorter and slicked back, while his clothing has a different appearance. It is difficult to make out much in the dark shot, and Mrs Norris is not visible, so the identification should still be treated as an observation rather than absolute confirmation. Nevertheless, seeing Whitehouse properly inhabit the role is one of the more intriguing aspects of the new series.

Neville Being There When They Find Fluffy Is a Major Book Detail

Perhaps the most satisfying part of this entire sequence is Neville’s presence when the children encounter Fluffy.

In the book, Neville is with Harry, Ron and Hermione during this nighttime adventure because he has been locked out of Gryffindor Tower. The four eventually end up in the Forbidden Corridor and discover Fluffy guarding the trapdoor.

The original film changed this sequence, effectively removing Neville from the discovery. HBO appears to be restoring the book version, with Neville screaming alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione when they encounter the enormous three-headed dog.

That is exactly the balance the series seems to be promising: remain faithful to the source material where the films had to make cuts, while also expanding the world with new material.

The Troll Looks Like a Creature From a Nightmare

The first proper look at the troll is another striking departure in visual tone. It has no obvious eyes, only nostrils and a mouth packed with teeth, while its skin looks wet, slimy and deeply unpleasant.

It is frightening in a way that feels almost less like a traditional fantasy creature and more like something that should not exist. That darker approach is particularly effective because magical creatures should sometimes feel genuinely strange and unsettling rather than simply looking like friendly fantasy animals.

The official Harry Potter site has described the trailer’s troll as having slimy skin pulled over its eyes and a saliva-filled roar, confirming just how deliberately monstrous this interpretation is.

The Mirror of Erised Looks More Ordinary Than the Movie Version

The Mirror of Erised receives its first major glimpse in the trailer, and the HBO design is immediately different from the film version.

The movie mirror is enormous, ornate and covered in gold, making it obvious that it is a magical object. HBO’s mirror looks considerably more understated and almost ordinary, which may actually make it more effective. If it looks like a normal mirror, Harry discovering that it can reveal his deepest desires becomes more surprising.

The more important detail, however, is what Harry appears to see when he touches it. Several faces seem to be visible behind him, suggesting that the series may be following the book rather than the film when it comes to Harry’s family.

In the movies, Harry primarily sees his parents. In the book, his reflection is surrounded by generations of his family. If the trailer is indeed showing multiple faces behind Harry, we could be looking at a much more book-accurate interpretation of his experience with the Mirror of Erised.

James and Lily Potter May Get More Than One Flashback

The trailer also offers what appears to be our first glimpse of James and Lily Potter running across a bridge while performing magic.

Lily’s hair does not appear particularly red in the footage, although the dark lighting makes it difficult to judge accurately, and her hair looks somewhat curly. Interestingly, that gives her a visual resemblance to Harry that may be intentional.

The bigger question is why this scene exists at all. We know the series will inevitably revisit the night James and Lily died, but this footage raises the possibility that their story could be expanded beyond the brief flashbacks audiences are accustomed to.

Could we actually see parts of James and Lily’s life from their own perspective? Could the series spend more time with Harry’s parents before Voldemort arrives? At this stage, those are theories rather than confirmed story plans, but the trailer certainly makes the possibility intriguing.

Godric’s Hollow Looks Warm, Quiet and Uncomfortably Peaceful

The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Godric’s Hollow, and the design is wonderfully cosy. The small house has a straw-like roof and tiny windows, giving the location a warm, almost storybook quality.

Then a cloaked figure approaches.

Presumably, that figure is Voldemort, which would technically make this our first glimpse of the Dark Lord in the series. However, the shot is so obscured that it tells us almost nothing about what this version of Voldemort will actually look like.

The contrast between the comforting appearance of the house and the figure approaching it is what makes the shot work. We know exactly what is coming, even if the characters in that moment do not.

Hedwig and Trevor Finally Appear

Two other beloved creatures make brief appearances in the trailer: Trevor and Hedwig.

Hedwig is shown sleeping, and that has led some viewers to question whether the owl looks slightly artificial. However, the sleeping pose itself may simply make the animatronic or creature work look different from what audiences expect.

The behind-the-scenes Finding Harry material has already shown how much practical and animatronic work is going into the production, so there is plenty of reason to reserve judgment based on one brief shot. Hedwig is such an important part of Harry’s life that the series has plenty of opportunities to establish the character more fully once the story begins.

Ron’s Bloody Face Hints at a Quidditch Fight the Films Skipped

One of the easiest details to miss comes after the Quidditch footage. Harry hugs Ron, but Ron has what appears to be a bloody nose.

That is important because it points toward another small sequence from Philosopher’s Stone that the film omitted. During the Quidditch match, Draco Malfoy spends much of his time antagonising Ron and the other Gryffindors from the stands. Eventually Ron has had enough and goes after him, with Neville getting caught up in the chaos as well.
