Fresh off the historic success of Oppenheimer, which dominated the 96th Academy Awards by winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Score, and several other major categories, acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan is preparing to take audiences on another ambitious cinematic journey.

This time, Nolan is stepping into the realm of ancient mythology with The Odyssey, a massive adaptation of Homer’s legendary epic poem. Combining one of history’s greatest stories with groundbreaking filmmaking technology, the project is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the decade.

From its release date and cast to its story, trailers, and revolutionary IMAX production techniques, here is everything currently known about Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

When Does Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Release?

Universal Pictures has officially scheduled The Odyssey for a worldwide theatrical release on July 17, 2026, with a strong emphasis on the IMAX experience. The film is being positioned as a major cinematic event, much like Nolan’s previous releases such as The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.

The excitement surrounding the film has already proven extraordinary. Advance IMAX ticket sales have reportedly broken records, demonstrating just how eager audiences are to witness Nolan’s interpretation of one of humanity’s oldest surviving stories.

How Long Will The Odyssey Be?

While an official runtime has not yet been announced, Nolan has confirmed during an interview with the Associated Press that The Odyssey will be shorter than Oppenheimer.

For comparison, Oppenheimer ran for approximately three hours and nine seconds, making it the longest film of Nolan’s career. Although The Odyssey is expected to be a large-scale epic, audiences can likely expect a somewhat more concise runtime than its Oscar-winning predecessor.

What Is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey About?

In December 2024, shortly before Christmas, it was officially revealed that Nolan’s next project would adapt Homer’s The Odyssey, one of the most influential literary works ever written.

Universal Pictures announced the project on December 23, 2024, describing it as:

“A mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX film technology.”

The studio further confirmed that the film would bring Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX screens for the very first time.

The Ancient Story Behind the Film

Believed to have been composed around the 8th century BCE, The Odyssey is one of the foundational texts of Western literature. Alongside The Iliad, it helped shape countless stories that followed, influencing everything from fantasy novels and adventure films to modern hero narratives.

At its heart is Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca, whose ten-year journey home begins after the conclusion of the Trojan War.

What should be a straightforward voyage becomes a seemingly impossible odyssey filled with monsters, gods, temptations, betrayals, and supernatural dangers.

During his travels, Odysseus encounters:

  • The terrifying Cyclops Polyphemus
  • The enchanting yet deadly Sirens
  • The immortal sea nymph Calypso
  • The powerful witch-goddess Circe
  • Numerous storms, curses, and divine interventions

Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope struggles to maintain hope while fending off dozens of ambitious suitors who believe Odysseus has died.

To delay choosing a new husband, Penelope devises a clever strategy. She promises to decide once she finishes weaving a funeral shroud, only to secretly unravel her work each night, prolonging the process and preserving her loyalty to her absent husband.

The story is widely regarded as one of history’s greatest examples of the classic hero’s journey and remains remarkably influential nearly three thousand years after it was first told.

A Historic First for IMAX Filmmaking

One of the most fascinating aspects of The Odyssey is its production.

Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema have reportedly pushed IMAX technology further than ever before. The film is being recognized as the first major blockbuster shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, using newly developed technology designed specifically to overcome previous limitations such as excessive camera noise during dialogue scenes.

Production took place across multiple countries, including:

  • Greece
  • Italy
  • Morocco
  • Iceland
  • Scotland
  • Malta
  • Western Sahara

The production reportedly used more than two million feet of film stock, making it one of the largest and most technically ambitious projects ever attempted.

Who Is Playing Odysseus?

The first major casting announcement arrived in October 2024 when reports revealed that Matt Damon was in talks to star in Nolan’s next film.

Universal later confirmed that Damon would portray Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca.

The first official image from the film showcased Damon wearing battle-worn armor reminiscent of classical Greek warriors, immediately generating excitement among fans of both mythology and historical epics.

Full Cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

As expected from a Christopher Nolan production, The Odyssey features one of the most impressive ensemble casts assembled in recent years.

Confirmed Major Roles

  • Anne Hathaway as Penelope
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus
  • Zendaya as Athena
  • Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy
  • Charlize Theron as Calypso
  • Robert Pattinson as Antinous

Additional Cast Members

The ensemble also includes:

  • Samantha Morton
  • Jesse Garcia
  • Will Yun Lee

The Cosmo Jarvis Situation

In early 2025, Shōgun star Cosmo Jarvis joined the cast. However, due to scheduling conflicts, he later departed the project.

His role was subsequently filled by Logan Marshall-Green.

What Role Does Zendaya Play?

One of the most talked-about casting announcements involved Zendaya.

The actress is portraying Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and strategic thinking. In Homer’s original poem, Athena serves as one of Odysseus’ greatest divine allies, repeatedly guiding and protecting him throughout his journey.

Interestingly, Tom Holland later revealed that despite both starring in the film, he and Zendaya do not actually share scenes together, as Holland plays Telemachus while Zendaya's role primarily operates on the divine side of the narrative.

Has a Trailer Been Released?

Yes.

After initially debuting exclusively in theaters, the first full trailer for The Odyssey was eventually released online.

The footage offered audiences their first proper look at Nolan’s vision of ancient Greece, showcasing massive practical sets, sweeping ocean sequences, large-scale battles, and glimpses of mythological creatures.

The Second Trailer

A second trailer followed, revealing additional footage and giving viewers better looks at several major characters, including:

  • Charlize Theron as Calypso
  • Robert Pattinson as Antinous
  • John Leguizamo
  • Other supporting cast members

The trailers have emphasized the emotional core of the story just as much as its spectacle, focusing heavily on Odysseus’ desperate struggle to reunite with Penelope and Telemachus after years of separation.

Why The Odyssey Could Be Christopher Nolan’s Most Ambitious Film Yet

Christopher Nolan has spent much of his career exploring ideas surrounding time, memory, sacrifice, destiny, and human perseverance.

With The Odyssey, he is adapting a story that helped define the modern concept of the hero's journey itself.

Combining ancient mythology, practical filmmaking, large-format IMAX photography, globe-spanning production, and one of Hollywood’s most impressive ensemble casts, The Odyssey appears positioned to become not only Nolan’s most expensive film to date but potentially one of the defining cinematic events of 2026. Whether audiences come for the mythology, the spectacle, or Nolan’s signature storytelling, all signs point toward a truly epic voyage when Odysseus finally returns to theaters on July 17, 2026.
