Wiccan Explained: Billy Maximoff’s Complete MCU Story, Powers, Origin, and Marvel Comics Connection

Billy Maximoff’s journey is one of the most unusual stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He began as the magically created son of Wanda Maximoff and Vision, grew up inside the Westview Anomaly alongside his twin brother Tommy, vanished when Wanda dismantled the Hex, and later found himself living inside the body of another teenager. For years, Billy had no idea who he really was. As William Kaplan, he built a new life, fell in love, became fascinated with witchcraft, and slowly began uncovering clues about his forgotten past.

Everything changed when he crossed paths with Agatha Harkness.

By the time Billy walked the Witches’ Road, discovered the truth about his powers, and finally embraced the name Wiccan, it became clear that he was not merely Wanda’s son. He was an extremely powerful magic user in his own right, capable of telepathy, telekinesis, Chaos Magic, reality manipulation, soul manipulation and far more. His story in Agatha All Along also mirrors parts of his comic-book history, while making several important changes to fit the MCU.

Marvel’s own character material similarly describes Wiccan as William “Billy” Kaplan, a young magician and Young Avenger who possesses powerful magical abilities and is connected to Scarlet Witch as the reincarnation of one of her twin sons.

Biography

Pre-Existence

Prophesied

Billy’s importance to the MCU’s magical mythology was hinted at long before he consciously understood his own existence. According to the history surrounding the Darkhold and Mount Wundagore, the ancient entity Chthon constructed the Darkhold Castle on the mountain and prophesied the coming of the Scarlet Witch and her son, Billy Maximoff. Billy was expected to inherit his mother’s magical abilities, and a statue depicting him was even constructed inside the castle.

That detail gives Billy’s existence a much greater significance within the MCU. He was not simply a magical child created by Wanda during an emotional breakdown. His story was seemingly connected to a much older mystical prophecy, making his eventual emergence as Wiccan feel less like an accident and more like the fulfilment of something that had been anticipated for centuries.

Westview Anomaly

Created by Wanda Maximoff

William “Billy” Maximoff was created by Wanda Maximoff through Chaos Magic inside the Westview Anomaly. After Wanda’s pregnancy accelerated unnaturally quickly, she gave birth to Billy shortly after his twin brother Tommy in the Vision residence in Westview. Doctor Stan Nielson checked the newborn boys before Wanda and Geraldine watched over them. Wanda also sang a Sokovian lullaby to settle the twins, drawing on memories of her own brother Pietro. The atmosphere changed when Geraldine mentioned Pietro and questioned Wanda about Ultron, prompting Wanda to become suspicious and ultimately eject Geraldine from Westview. Billy and Tommy stopped crying only after Wanda returned to them.

Billy was therefore born from a very unusual combination of Wanda’s grief, Chaos Magic and the artificial reality she had created around herself. His existence was magical from the beginning, and that connection to Wanda’s powers would eventually define nearly every part of his future.

Growing Up Fast

Billy and Tommy did not experience childhood in anything resembling a normal way. Soon after their birth, Wanda and Vision became exhausted because the twins refused to sleep and constantly cried. While the parents struggled with them, Agnes O’Connor entered the house and offered to help. Before long, Wanda and Vision realized that the babies had disappeared from their cribs and had somehow aged themselves from newborns into five-year-olds.

The twins later discovered a stray dog and brought him home, hoping their parents would allow them to keep him. Wanda warned them that having a dog was a serious responsibility, while Vision pointed out that they were too young. Billy and Tommy simply responded by aging themselves again, this time becoming ten-year-olds. Their rapid aging made it possible for them to behave more like ordinary children, even though their existence was still completely dependent on Wanda’s reality.

The boys named the dog Sparky and grew attached to him. Billy spent time training Sparky and giving him treats, and Wanda tried to teach the twins that despite their arguments, they would always remain brothers. Wanda also told them about Pietro, explaining that her own brother was far away.

That relatively warm period ended when Sparky disappeared. Wanda, Billy and Tommy went looking for him and were eventually approached by Agnes, who revealed that the dog had died. The twins were devastated and immediately tried to age themselves again, seemingly hoping that becoming older might somehow change what had happened. They begged Wanda to resurrect Sparky, but she insisted that she could not bring him back. Vision later arrived and comforted his sons.

Sparky’s death is an important early moment for Billy because it establishes how deeply he struggles with loss. His instinct is not to accept death but to search for a way around it, something that would become even more significant once he discovered just how much his magic could accomplish.

First Halloween

Billy’s abilities became far more obvious during Halloween. While enjoying the festivities with Tommy and the person they believed to be their uncle Pietro, Billy eventually demonstrated that he could manipulate objects telekinetically. He later used those abilities more instinctively, especially when he sensed that Vision was in danger outside the Westview boundary.

Billy’s telepathy allowed him to detect Vision’s distress and understand that something was wrong even before he could see it for himself. He immediately warned Wanda, showing that his powers were not limited to moving objects. He could also perceive thoughts and emotions from people around him.

This was one of the first major indications that Billy had inherited much more from Wanda than her outward appearance or temperament. His abilities were developing into a distinctly psychic form of magic.

Abducted by Agatha Harkness

The following morning, Billy and Tommy found themselves caught in the increasingly unstable reality Wanda had created. Their games started shifting between different periods, while Billy became aware that he could hear voices in his head. Those voices belonged to the people of Westview, meaning Billy was unconsciously sensing their thoughts.

Wanda herself was becoming increasingly unstable and emotionally overwhelmed. That was the perfect opportunity for Agatha Harkness, still disguised as Agnes O’Connor, to intervene. Agatha offered to look after the boys while Wanda rested, and Wanda accepted.

At first, Agatha behaved like a kind neighbour. Billy even noticed that he could not hear her thoughts, something he found strange. She reassured the boys, gave them food and turned on the television, but the façade eventually disappeared. Agatha locked Billy and Tommy in her witch’s lair and revealed that she had been manipulating events from the beginning.

Agatha later brought the twins outside and restrained them with magic, causing them to choke as they cried out for their mother. Wanda arrived in time to save them, and Agatha finally revealed Wanda’s true identity as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda blasted Agatha away, giving Billy and Tommy the opportunity to escape.

Battle of Westview

During the final battle in Westview, Billy became an active participant rather than simply a frightened child caught in the middle of his mother’s conflict.

Billy sensed Wanda’s distress and told Tommy that she needed help. When they reached the town square, the boys began to disappear as Wanda started dismantling the Hex. Wanda stopped momentarily when she saw what was happening and embraced her children and Vision before continuing the fight.

After Agatha absorbed Wanda’s powers, S.W.O.R.D. forces arrived in armored vehicles, followed by White Vision. Wanda instructed Billy and Tommy to deal with the soldiers while she fought Agatha. Billy responded by using his mental abilities to incapacitate S.W.O.R.D. agents, while Tommy used his speed to disrupt them.

Tyler Hayward eventually stepped out of his vehicle and aimed his weapon at the boys. Monica Rambeau intervened and used her newly acquired abilities to absorb the bullets, but when one slipped through, Billy stopped it with telekinesis and threw it harmlessly to the ground. He then told Monica that he liked her powers.

The battle ultimately ended with Wanda defeating Agatha, and Billy watched as his mother transformed Agatha back into the persona of Agnes.

Dissolution of the Hex

The victory came with a devastating cost. After the battle, Billy returned home with Wanda, Vision and Tommy. Wanda and Vision tucked the twins into bed and thanked them for giving her the chance to become a mother.

Billy noticed that Tommy had fallen asleep quickly and focused on the sound of his brother breathing. Then something changed. As Wanda dismantled the Hex, Billy realized that the sounds around him were disappearing. He could no longer hear Tommy, and then he could barely hear anything at all.

Through his telepathy, Billy heard Wanda and Vision sharing their final words. Understanding that the world around him was being erased, Billy instinctively used his magic to remove his and Tommy’s souls from their bodies in an attempt to save them before the Hex could completely destroy them.

That desperate act is what allowed Billy’s story to continue after Westview.

Taking Over William Kaplan

Transferring His Soul

While Wanda was dismantling the Westview Anomaly, another teenager was caught in a completely different tragedy. William Kaplan was travelling home with his parents, Rebecca and Jeff, when Rebecca became distracted by the collapsing Hex. Their vehicle crashed into a tree, and thirteen-year-old William suffered a fatal head injury.

As William’s heart stopped, Billy’s disappearing soul instinctively moved into his recently deceased body. William already carried a magical sigil that prevented witches from learning his true name, which ultimately helped protect Billy’s identity. Billy awakened inside William’s body calling for Tommy, but the transfer left him with severe amnesia. Officer Alice Wu-Gulliver eventually helped him reach a hospital.

This is where the MCU deliberately diverges from the comics while still preserving the basic idea of Billy becoming Billy Kaplan. In Marvel Comics, Billy Kaplan is the reincarnation of Wanda’s son, and Marvel’s official reading guide places his rebirth and eventual emergence as Wiccan at the heart of his origin.

Amnesia

Billy woke up without understanding that he was Billy Maximoff. When he looked at his reflection, he did not recognize the face staring back at him.

At Eastview General Hospital, he discovered that his ability to read minds had survived the transfer. He overheard Rebecca and Jeff discussing his amnesia with a doctor and later listened to their thoughts directly. Because he was unable to distinguish between spoken conversation and thoughts, he mistakenly believed his parents were arguing and asked them to stop fighting. Rebecca explained that the doctors expected his memory might eventually return and that he would soon be discharged.

The situation was deeply unsettling because Billy had lost his memories but not his abilities. His mind no longer knew who he was, but his magic remembered.

Accepting a New Identity

Returning to the Kaplan family home was equally strange. Billy saw family photographs of someone who was supposed to be him and struggled to connect those images to the person he saw in the mirror.

His telepathy made things even harder. He could hear Rebecca and Jeff worrying about him and wishing their old son would return. Eventually, the pressure became too much and he angrily told them to stop worrying. He quickly regretted it, apologized, and retreated to his bedroom.

There, Billy discovered something unexpectedly reassuring. The room was filled with posters, objects and decorations connected to magic. Looking at everything around him, he realized that this new life contained parts of him that felt strangely familiar. He eventually accepted the name William Kaplan and consciously chose to live as William.

That decision would matter later because Billy never simply discards William. Instead, he gradually comes to understand that William Kaplan and Billy Maximoff are both part of who he has become.

Fascination with Magic

William remained fascinated by witchcraft even though he had no idea why.

He became a fan of Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore and desperately wanted a signed limited-edition recording of the Ballad of the Witches’ Road. Unfortunately, the record cost more than he could earn during the summer while working at the Hokey Pokey Bowl.

What initially looked like an ordinary teenage obsession was actually one of the clearest clues to William’s real identity. His fascination with witchcraft was not simply something he had chosen. It was connected to the magical nature of his existence.

Discovering His Past

Confession to Eddie

By 2026, William had met Eddie, who became his boyfriend. Although William had created a life for himself, the missing years before the crash continued to bother him. He still possessed the mysterious sigil and could not understand why it was so important.

During a date with Eddie, the subject came up again. William used his telepathy and sensed that Eddie was preparing to confess his love, but the moment pushed William into finally explaining the truth about his own situation.

He told Eddie that he had died in the crash and that he was not entirely the same person when he came back. William admitted that he remembered nothing from before the accident and had been pretending to remember because he did not want to scare his parents.

He also explained that meeting Eddie was the first time his life had felt normal. Eddie responded by asking the question William had spent years trying to answer: if he was not really William Kaplan, then who was he?

Research

William began researching the Westview Anomaly in earnest. He discovered evidence of runes in the sky and concluded that witchcraft had played a role in the Hex.

He brought Eddie into his investigation and explained that people connected to the Westview incident refused to talk about what had happened. William eventually found a possible source of information in Ralph Bohner, a former Westview resident he had located through Reddit.

The investigation became the bridge between William’s ordinary life and Billy Maximoff’s buried past.

Speaking with Ralph Bohner

William and Eddie eventually met Ralph Bohner in a parking garage. Bohner was suspicious, paranoid and deeply uncomfortable discussing his experiences in Westview, but William pushed him for answers.

Bohner revealed that Wanda had forced Westview’s residents to live inside a sitcom-like reality and that the experience had left him traumatized. He also made it clear that Agatha Harkness remained a particularly disturbing figure in his memories.

William then asked about Agatha, which only made Bohner more nervous.

Eventually, Bohner told William about Billy and Tommy Maximoff. Tommy had been a speedster, while Billy could read minds. The brothers disappeared when the Hex collapsed, and Agatha was still in Westview under a spell.

Most importantly, hearing Tommy’s name caused something inside William to click. His forgotten identity was beginning to surface.

Witch Research

William returned home and continued researching the mystery. While listening to Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore’s recording of the Ballad of the Witches’ Road, he began investigating Agatha Harkness.

His research suggested that freeing someone from a magical spell required an important personal object connected to them. William therefore decided to travel to Westview and find something that belonged to Agatha so he could release her.

A New Quest

Saving Agatha Harkness

William travelled to Westview and broke into Agatha Harkness’ home. He found her locket and planned to use it as part of the spell needed to free her.

Unfortunately, subtlety was not exactly William’s strength. He knocked over a lamp, made enough noise to expose himself and ended up being chased by Agatha before being accidentally struck by Sharon Davis.

Still trapped inside the distorted identity of Agnes O’Connor, Agatha treated William like a suspect in a bizarre murder investigation. William tried to explain everything, but Wanda’s spell filtered his words through Agatha’s distorted perception, making the situation even more absurd.

William eventually began reciting the spell, but Agatha tied him up and threw him into a closet. The spell nevertheless began weakening, and Agatha was ultimately freed.

Teaming Up

William wanted one thing from Agatha: he wanted her to take him down the Witches’ Road.

Agatha initially refused, knowing exactly how dangerous the Road was. William tried to persuade her by explaining what he knew about her, telling her that he had broken Wanda’s spell and warning her that the Salem Seven were coming.

Agatha finally became interested when she realized that William had managed to break a spell created by the Scarlet Witch.

She then asked who he actually was.

William first answered that he was William Kaplan, but the magical sigil prevented Agatha from hearing the name. He tried again with Billy Maximoff, and the same thing happened.

That was the moment Agatha began to suspect that William was hiding something extraordinary.

Finding a Coven

Agatha explained that they needed a coven to access the Witches’ Road. William followed her with enormous enthusiasm as they began searching for witches nearby.

They eventually arrived at Madame Calderu’s Psychic Readings and met Lilia Calderu. Agatha attempted to present William as her socially awkward son, Beauford, but Lilia immediately saw through the performance.

Once the two witches discussed the Road, Agatha’s reputation and the fact that she had spent years under Wanda’s spell, Lilia agreed to join. William was visibly excited by Lilia’s powers and fascinated by the entire process.

Recruiting Jennifer Kale

Next came Jennifer Kale.

Agatha mocked Jennifer almost immediately, but William took a different approach. He discussed Jennifer’s legal problems and pointed out the absurd scale of the charges against her.

Jennifer revealed that she had spent roughly a century bound by a spell, and William suggested that the Witches’ Road might be her best chance to regain her freedom.

He eventually gave her the address and told her that if freedom mattered to her, she should join them.

Recruiting Alice Wu-Gulliver

The next witch was Alice Wu-Gulliver, the daughter of Lorna Wu.

William was immediately excited because he was a huge fan of Lorna and her music. He even mentioned his unsuccessful attempt to buy the signed recording of the Ballad of the Witches’ Road.

Alice initially refused to believe that the Road was real. Agatha tried to convince her by suggesting that the Road might help her discover what happened to her mother, who had supposedly been lost to the Road.

Although Alice initially walked away, she eventually joined the coven.

Preparation

With the coven assembled, William began preparing for the journey.

He set up a banner welcoming the coven to Agatha’s home, offered Jennifer snacks and enthusiastically tried to organize everyone. The witches, meanwhile, reminded him that they still needed a green witch.

William noticed another mark on the list that looked like a black heart rather than a name.

That symbol was eventually revealed to represent him.

Agatha then returned with Sharon Davis, whom she had known in Westview as Mrs. Hart. Once everyone had gathered, William assumed they could simply drive to the Road, but Agatha explained that the Road had to be conjured.

They prepared for the ritual and waited for the supernatural path to appear.

Incoming Threat

While upstairs with Señor Scratchy, William heard strange whispering and went outside to investigate.

He saw a hooded figure.

The figure then split into seven separate beings: the Salem Seven.

William immediately ran back inside and tried to barricade the house as the creatures approached. The coven quickly realized that the only way to survive was to conjure the Witches’ Road.

The ritual succeeded.

The group rushed through the portal and found themselves standing on the legendary Road.

The Witches’ Road

Potions Witch Trial

The Witches’ Road immediately proved to be far more dangerous than William had imagined.

The Road created magical environments based on the witches’ fears, weaknesses and abilities. Each trial demanded that the group use a different form of magic while confronting something deeply personal.

During the first major trial, the coven entered a beach house where they found a riddle and a mysterious bottle of wine. Agatha insisted that they drink it because the trial required them to do so.

William refused because he was too young.

The others drank the wine and soon began showing signs of poisoning.

William and Alice searched the house for ingredients that Jennifer could use to make an antidote. William detected eucalyptus and helped find the materials they needed. Jennifer prepared the potion while water began surrounding the house.

When Agatha refused to drink the poison, William became so desperate that he considered drinking it himself. Agatha eventually drank it instead.

The antidote worked, but Sharon Davis remained unconscious. William refused to leave her behind, and the group dragged her through the exit just before the entire house flooded.

Mourning Sharon Davis

The rescue was ultimately unsuccessful.

Sharon Davis died after the trial.

Billy was devastated and began digging her grave. He also blamed the entire coven, arguing that they had failed because they were supposed to protect one another.

With Sharon gone, the remaining witches needed a new green witch to continue the journey. William used his spellbook as they performed a ritual to summon one, eventually bringing Rio Vidal into their path.

Protection Witch Trial

The next trial focused on Alice Wu-Gulliver and the curse that had followed her family.

The coven entered a recording studio where William found a record and played it, only for a disturbing demonic song to begin.

The group discovered that the recording was actually Lorna Wu’s version of the Ballad of the Witches’ Road and that the song was connected to Alice’s family curse.

The curse attacked the witches one after another. Alice used protection magic to keep everyone alive, while William tried to help determine what they were dealing with.

The curse eventually slammed Billy into a window, sending glass into his side. Despite his injury, he refused to admit how badly hurt he was and continued helping the group.

Because he knew how to play guitar, Billy joined the coven in performing the song. The music exposed the curse, allowing Alice to confront and destroy it.

Billy collapsed from his wound and later woke up in one of the Road’s huts.

He immediately asked about the sigil that concealed his identity. Agatha told him that the sigil could not simply be removed; it would disappear once it was no longer necessary.

Ambush on Agatha Harkness’ Coven

The Salem Seven were still hunting the coven.

Lilia sensed their approach and warned the others that they were coming.

The witches tried to escape, and Billy suggested using broomsticks. His idea was initially mocked because of the baggage and symbolism associated with witches riding brooms, but the growing danger eventually convinced everyone that they had to try.

The improvised escape allowed them to move away from the immediate threat, but the Road itself soon revealed that it would not simply allow them to leave.

Spirit Witch Trial

The next trial took the coven into a cabin decorated like a strange teenage sleepover.

Billy noticed that his spellbook was missing and then began trying to work out whose trial they were facing. The presence of a blood moon suggested that the boundary between the living and dead was thin enough for spirits to appear.

An Ouija board appeared, and Billy immediately began explaining the rules. He specifically warned Agatha not to taunt the spirits.

The board initially identified the spirit as Mrs. Hart, but Agatha began pretending to be Sharon Davis. The others quickly recognized that she was playing games.

The board eventually revealed a far more disturbing identity: Death.

The spirit demanded that Agatha be punished.

The situation escalated when Agatha became possessed by the ghost of her mother, Evanora Harkness. Evanora revealed the hatred she had carried toward her daughter and insisted that Agatha be left behind.

Billy refused to abandon Agatha, even though he had every reason to distrust her.

Alice eventually attacked Evanora with her powers, only for Agatha to drain Alice’s magic from her.

The Ouija board then spelled out the name Nicholas Scratch, Agatha’s dead son, and Billy desperately shouted the name in an attempt to reach her.

It was too late.

Alice’s life was drained from her body, and Agatha gained her powers. Billy desperately searched for a way to bring Alice back, insisting that there had to be a spell, but Jennifer told him that she was already gone.

Sigil Destroyed

Alice’s death changed Billy completely.

He confronted Agatha and demanded to know why she had killed Alice. Agatha claimed that she had lost control, but Billy refused to believe her and accused her of wanting Alice’s power.

Jennifer agreed that power had always been central to Agatha’s actions.

Billy became disgusted by the idea that witchcraft meant killing people for personal gain. He asked whether that was genuinely what it meant to be a witch and declared that he wanted no part of it.

Agatha reminded him that he was very much like Wanda.

That was enough to push Billy over the edge.

His powers exploded outward.

Billy used mental manipulation to take control of Lilia and Jennifer, forcing them to attack Agatha and throw her into a pit of mud. He then turned the same power on them, leaving both witches trapped as well.

A glowing blue crown appeared over Billy’s head.

This was the moment his Wiccan identity truly began to emerge.

Billy then destroyed the wooden sigil that had protected his identity.

Agatha revealed that she had suspected who he was almost from the moment they met. Even with the sigil blocking his name, Billy and Wanda had the same characteristic tell.

When Agatha finally called him Billy, the sigil was no longer able to conceal the name.

Billy asked how long she had known.

Agatha admitted that she had only become certain when he finally lost control of himself.

She also asked how Billy had come to occupy William Kaplan’s body, but Billy refused to explain.

Agatha told him not to feel guilty for surviving. As she saw it, his survival was exactly what made him a witch.

Billy insisted that he was different from her.

Agatha laughed.

When Billy tried to summon his powers again, nothing happened. Agatha mocked him for possessing incredible power but lacking the ability to control it.

Billy refused to give up.

Then Agatha realized what he truly wanted.

Billy was not searching for Wanda.

He was searching for Tommy.

He knew that his brother was still somewhere in the world but had no idea where.

Despite not trusting Agatha, Billy agreed to continue the Road with her.

Conversation with Agatha

Billy’s relationship with Agatha remained complicated because she was simultaneously connected to some of the happiest and darkest moments of his life.

Agatha had once been his babysitter. She had also kidnapped him, manipulated Wanda, attempted to drain magical power and killed members of her own coven.

Even so, she was now one of the few people capable of helping Billy understand his abilities.

Billy also pushed back against Agatha’s attempts to define his family for him. Agatha was Wanda’s former friend, but Billy insisted that Rebecca Kaplan was his mother.

That statement says a lot about Billy’s identity. Even after recovering his past, he did not simply abandon the life he had built as William Kaplan.

Divination Witch Trial

Billy’s identity crisis remained unresolved as the group entered Lilia Calderu’s trial.

He was forced to confront the question that had haunted him ever since discovering the truth: was he William Kaplan or Billy Maximoff?

The answer is not as simple as choosing one name.

Billy carries Billy Maximoff’s memories, soul and magical heritage, but he also lived for years as William Kaplan and genuinely became part of the Kaplan family.

That tension is one of the most compelling aspects of his character because the MCU does not treat William merely as an empty vessel. Billy inherited his body and his life, but he also built something new within it.

Resurrecting Tommy

By the final trial, Billy was closer than ever to finding his brother.

He emerged from a body bag inside a magical morgue and found Jennifer still unable to use her powers because of the binding spell Agatha had placed on her years earlier.

Jennifer eventually performed an unbinding ritual using Agatha’s hair, restoring her magic.

Agatha then offered to help Billy find a body for Tommy.

Billy focused on his last memory with his brother. He remembered lying beside Tommy as the Hex collapsed and realizing that Tommy’s soul was still inside him.

Agatha explained that Tommy could not remain there forever.

Billy needed to find a body.

Under Agatha’s guidance, he began looking for one through the traces of Tommy’s soul.

Billy eventually saw a boy named Thomas Shepherd who had died after being drowned in a cruel prank. Billy was horrified and asked whether he was killing an innocent child so that Tommy could survive.

Before he could fully process the situation, Tommy’s soul entered Thomas Shepherd’s body.

Billy had succeeded in giving his brother another physical existence, just as he had once done for himself.

Finding His Brother

Battling Death

Billy’s journey eventually returned him to Westview, where he confronted the supernatural forces surrounding Agatha and the Witches’ Road.

He also became increasingly interested in Agatha’s history with her son, Nicholas Scratch, and wondered whether the circumstances of Nicky’s death had any connection to the experiences Billy had endured himself.
