In the shadows of Taishō-era Japan, an ancient evil festers.
Under the command of the ruthless Muzan Kibutsuji — the very first and most formidable demon — lurk creatures of nightmare: the demons of Demon Slayer.

They move unseen, spreading death and chaos, their presence unknown until it's far too late. All demons possess terrifying power and twisted abilities known as Blood Demon Arts, but none are more feared than Muzan’s personal elite: the Upper Moons.

These six demonic titans have walked the earth for centuries, bathing it in blood and ruin. They've slain countless innocents, brought down seasoned warriors, and even the mighty Hashira — the Demon Slayer Corps' finest — often fall before their monstrous might.

Each Upper Moon is uniquely horrifying, with distinct personalities, grotesque powers, and battle experience spanning ages. But what truly sets them apart is this: they are Muzan’s chosen — the apex predators of the demon world.

Here’s a look at who they are... and why they’re so utterly terrifying.

Upper Rank 6 — Daki and Gyutaro

Infinity — gizaoyas: DAKI & GYUTARO - UPPER RANK SIX SIBLINGS

Two bodies. One rank. Bound by blood… and tragedy.

Daki and Gyutaro, the sixth of Muzan’s Upper Moons, stand as a twisted reflection of Tanjiro and Nezuko — a pair of siblings warped by suffering, yet still inseparably devoted.

When the Demon Slayer Corps first encountered them in the chaos of the Entertainment District, it was Daki who appeared first — beautiful, deadly, and cruel. But beneath the surface, hidden in the shadows, waited her brother Gyutaro: the true Upper Rank 6, as acknowledged by Muzan himself.

While Daki played the role of the alluring predator, Gyutaro remained concealed — manipulating the fight, protecting his sister, and striking with venomous rage when she was wounded. It's a rare bond for demons, one that defies the corruption of Muzan’s curse. Gyutaro’s grotesque appearance only intensified his worship of Daki’s beauty, treating her not just as a comrade, but as the last light in his bleak existence.

Daki’s power lies in her obi — flowing, lethal pink sashes that serve as extensions of herself. These ribbons can slash, ensnare, and even fight independently, spreading her influence through entire districts. Yet she’s not at full strength until all pieces of her obi are reassembled within her.

Gyutaro, in contrast, is raw brutality. Wielding dual poisoned sickles, he cuts through opponents with slashing precision and sprays Blood Demon Art projectiles in a flurry of toxic crimson.

But what makes them truly terrifying... is their shared mortality. These two can only be defeated when both are beheaded at the exact same moment — a cruel twist that turns every battle into a high-stakes race against time.

Upper Rank 5 — Gyokko

This may contain: an animated image of a woman with green eyes

Grotesque. Distorted. Elegant in the most unsettling ways.

As the fifth of Muzan Kibutsuji’s elite demons, Gyokko stands a tier above Daki and Gyutaro — both in rank and in sheer monstrosity. He is a being twisted beyond recognition, his form a nightmare of surreal design. With a ghostly white, legless torso emerging from an ornate, porcelain pot… Gyokko resembles a grotesque sculpture brought horribly to life.

Where his eyes should be, there are mouths — leering, smirking, whispering — while his actual eyes reside disturbingly on his forehead and chin. His body is littered with tiny arms, some flowing from his scalp like hair, others sprouting at random across his twisted flesh.

Despite his terrifying visage, Gyokko maintains a disturbingly polite demeanor. He speaks with charm, even offers "gifts" to his fellow Upper Moons — though these gestures are rarely without sinister intent. Beneath his refined tone lies the same sadism and cruelty that defines Muzan’s finest.

In battle, Gyokko’s style is as bizarre as his form. With his Blood Demon Art, he conjures legions of hideous, fish-like demons, each carrying strange and deadly powers. He’s a master of spatial manipulation, teleporting between his countless pots with ease — confusing his opponents, ambushing from unexpected angles, or dragging them into his ceramic horrors.

When truly threatened, Gyokko sheds his monstrous shell and reveals his true form — a more humanoid, scaled body with enhanced physical prowess. In this state, he abandons illusions and engages more directly, showcasing speed, strength, and vicious intent.

Gyokko is not a warrior in the traditional sense — he is a twisted artist, sculpting death in the form of abominations.

Upper Rank 4 — Hantengu

a cartoon character with red eyes and chinese symbols around him

A trembling figure… hiding unspeakable terror within.

Despite holding the title of Upper Moon 4, Hantengu presents himself as anything but threatening. Crawling pitifully on all fours, flinching from both allies and enemies alike, he appears cowardly — broken. But don’t be fooled. This is no weakness… it’s a carefully veiled deception.

Because when Hantengu is beheaded, the nightmare truly begins.
From his severed body emerge multiple demons, each one a distinct personality, forged from raw, unstable emotion. Up to four alternate forms can manifest at once — each stronger, faster, and more specialized than the last. And under specific conditions… even more monstrous evolutions are born.

Hantengu’s emotional fragility is at the core of his power. He plays the victim, crying innocence even as he commits atrocities. But his fractured psyche creates demons of horrifying power:

  • Sekido — the embodiment of anger, strikes with devastating lightning-based ranged attacks.

  • Karaku — representing pleasure, wields a massive fan that conjures brutal gusts of wind.

  • Aizetsu — the face of sorrow, pierces from afar with his powerful spear strikes.

  • Urogijoy incarnate, soars through the air and unleashes sonic shockwaves with his voice and claws.

These four can attack in perfect coordination — overwhelming even the strongest demon slayers. But when they fuse, they become something far more dangerous:
Zohakuten, the manifestation of hatred. This towering demon combines all of their powers and adds his own — wood manipulation, creating massive dragon-like constructs that crush and devastate anything in their path.

And through it all, the true body of Hantengu remains hidden — small, pitiful, and almost unkillable, protected by layers of illusions and misdirection.

Upper Rank 3 — Akaza

This may contain: an anime character holding his hand up in front of him with the words upper rank 3

A warrior. A monster. A man caught in the battle between purpose and pain.

First revealed at the brutal conclusion of the Mugen Train arc, Akaza immediately made his presence known — not with stealth, but with power. Blazing speed, unrelenting strikes, and a thirst for combat that burns like fire. He doesn't just fight his enemies… he respects them. He praises their strength. And then he destroys them.

But within Muzan’s hierarchy of demons, Akaza stands apart. Not for loyalty. Not for ambition. But for the raw, conflicting humanity that refuses to die inside him.

Though ranked third among the Upper Moons, Akaza carries the weight of rivalry. He openly disrespects Doma, detesting his eerie calm and appetite for women — a line Akaza refuses to cross. His hatred runs deep, rooted in conviction, born from a vow made in his long-forgotten past.
And with Kokushibo, the first Upper Moon, Akaza harbors a silent inferiority — a quiet shame that he cannot surpass the swordsman who embodies perfection.

In battle, Akaza is a pure martial artist — no creatures, no gimmicks, no illusions.
His Blood Demon Art fuses seamlessly with hand-to-hand combat, enhancing his strikes, reflexes, and precision to devastating levels. He fights like a storm — fast, fluid, merciless. With every punch, he tears through flesh and bone, using an ever-evolving set of destructive techniques.

His greatest weapon, however, is not just his strength… it’s his will.
Even decapitation cannot immediately stop him. He clings to life through sheer resolve, refusing to fall until his mind and body are truly broken.

And yet… beneath the violence and fury lies something deeply human.
A lingering memory. A face. A promise. Akaza’s refusal to consume women is not weakness — it is his final tether to who he once was… a man who loved, and lost.

Upper Rank 2 – Doma

image

Doma is the second strongest demon among Muzan Kibutsuji’s Upper Moons, yet despite his immense power, he’s disliked by many — both humans and fellow demons. His overly casual and friendly demeanor hides a disturbing truth: Doma lacks any real emotions or empathy. While most demons experience emotional detachment over time, Doma was born emotionally void. He doesn’t genuinely feel sadness, joy, or anger — instead, he mimics emotions to appear normal, which many find creepy or unnerving.

Even Muzan doesn’t hold Doma in particularly high regard, and his peers, like Akaza, openly despise him. One major reason Akaza dislikes Doma is because Doma frequently eats women, something Akaza strongly refuses to do.

Outside of his rank and raw power, Doma also leads a large cult-like religious group that worships him as a god. This cult provides him with a constant stream of humans to consume. Doma has also played a major role in several characters’ backstories — he’s responsible for turning Gyutaro and Daki into demons, and he personally killed Shinobu’s sister and Inosuke’s mother.

Doma’s Blood Demon Art revolves around ice manipulation. He can produce cold air, create ice constructs that fight independently, and launch ice-based attacks that don’t lose power even when he’s not directly controlling them. These constructs can mirror his techniques, making him extremely dangerous in battle.

Despite his ability to end fights quickly, Doma tends to drag things out. He enjoys "playing" with his enemies — not out of malice, but because of his complete emotional detachment. He doesn’t truly care about anything, which makes his calm and polite behavior all the more unsettling.

Upper Rank 1 – Kokushibo

This may contain: an animated image of a woman with orange eyes holding a knife in her hand and looking at the camera

Kokushibo is the highest-ranking demon among Muzan Kibutsuji’s Upper Moons and is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous beings in the Demon Slayer universe. What sets Kokushibo apart from the others is his origin — he was originally a human and a Demon Slayer before becoming a demon, making him an extremely rare case.

He lived during the Sengoku era, the same period when breathing styles and the Demon Slayer Corps were first established. As a human, Kokushibo was known as Michikatsu Tsugikuni, and he spent most of his life overshadowed by his younger twin brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, who became the strongest Demon Slayer in history and the creator of Sun Breathing. Michikatsu’s growing sense of inferiority and jealousy toward Yoriichi eventually led him down the path to becoming a demon, in a desperate attempt to gain power and avoid death from old age.

Kokushibo has a cold, stoic personality, rarely showing emotion and speaking only when necessary. His calm demeanor, combined with his overwhelming strength, makes him both intimidating and efficient in battle. Even other Upper Moons show him respect — and fear — due to his unmatched power and long experience.

What makes Kokushibo especially deadly is his ability to combine demonic abilities with Breathing Style techniques. He uses a unique style known as Moon Breathing, which is both visually distinct and highly versatile. Thanks to his demon physiology, these techniques are performed at superhuman speed and power levels far beyond what normal Demon Slayers are capable of.

Additionally, Kokushibo’s katana is made from his own flesh, allowing him to manipulate its shape and length during combat. This gives him extended range, unpredictable attack angles, and the ability to adapt his style mid-fight. His combat skills, regenerative abilities, and sheer power make him a nearly unbeatable opponent.

From the courageous Demon Slayers to the terrifying Upper Moons, Demon Slayer offers a rich cast of characters — each with unique stories, abilities, and emotional depth. Whether it’s Tanjiro’s unwavering resolve, Nezuko’s quiet strength, or the tragic complexities of demons like Akaza and Kokushibo, every character adds a vital thread to the series' emotional and action-packed narrative.

As the anime continues to evolve and the manga’s legacy grows, Demon Slayer proves that it’s not just the breathtaking animation or intense battles that make it unforgettable — it’s the characters who breathe life into every scene.
