James Gunn’s Peacemaker closed out its second season with a finale that packed action, chaos, and crucial DCU connections into one explosive episode. Fans were treated to a horde of bloodthirsty imps, the resolution of several long-running character arcs, and a major setup for the upcoming Man of Tomorrow sequel.
While every DCU film and series is designed to stand alone, Gunn has emphasized that Peacemaker Season 2 and Man of Tomorrow are “very, very connected.” With the season now complete, it’s time to dive into how Peacemaker is laying the groundwork for the next chapter of the DC Universe — spoilers ahead.
Peacemaker’s second season largely revolved around the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a device capable of traversing multiple realities. For much of the season, Peacemaker hopped between the prime Earth and what initially appeared to be a utopian world where his father Auggie and brother Keith were still alive. But as the finale revealed, this alternate reality is actually Earth X, a dystopian planet where the Nazis won World War II.
In the shocking conclusion, Rick Flag reveals a far-reaching plan: to relocate the Earth’s metahumans to a new world called Salvation. Peacemaker is forcibly thrown through the portal, stranded on this alien world, leaving viewers on edge.
James Gunn confirmed the connection to Man of Tomorrow, writing:
"Where Chris is at the end, what is happening between the government and the metahumans, Rick and Lex's new partnership, and all of their decision to do what they did is all a part of the future, MoT, and more."
With Rick Flag now allied with Lex Luthor, Salvation could become an off-world prison for metahuman enemies — possibly even Superman. Gunn teased to Howard Stern that Man of Tomorrow will feature “Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” Could we see Flag double-cross Luthor, leaving him alongside Superman on Salvation? Could this be the moment where Peacemaker finally steps up as a true hero? Fans can only speculate, but the possibilities are thrilling.
Salvation itself isn’t just a random planet. The DC comics arc Salvation Run (2007–2008) depicted it as a training ground for the New Gods of Apokolips, ruled by the sinister DeSaad. Gunn confirmed on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast:
"There is a comic called Salvation [Run]… Amanda Waller and Rick Flag say, 'Screw it, there’s all these metahumans that keep getting into prison and out of prison… we’re gonna send them to this other planet where they can’t get off.' That’s where we’re beginning a larger story in the DCU."
Peacemaker Season 2 doesn’t just end with a cliffhanger — it sets up critical connections for the next phase of the DC Universe. With the introduction of Salvation, alliances shifting, and metahumans stranded on an alien world, fans can expect Man of Tomorrow to deliver cosmic stakes, morally complex storytelling, and perhaps even the emergence of a new hero in Chris “Peacemaker” Smith.
As the DCU continues to expand, Gunn’s approach proves that these stories aren’t just about superheroes fighting villains — they’re about consequences, strategy, and how even the most chaotic characters can shape the future of a universe.
at keep getting into prison and out of prison… we’re gonna send them to this other planet where they can’t get off.' That’s where we’re beginning a larger story in the DCU."
Peacemaker Season 2 has not only delivered epic action, dark humor, and character-driven drama, but also set the stage for the next thrilling chapter of the DCU with Man of Tomorrow. From the chaos of Salvation to Rick Flag’s machinations and the fate of Earth’s metahumans, the finale leaves fans on the edge of their seats.
